Fury vs Joshua Cardiff: Date, Tickets, Venue And Title Stakes
Tyson Fury meets Anthony Joshua at the Principality Stadium on December 11th. Here is the date, ringwalk time, ticket prices, title and undercard picture.
Fury vs Joshua Cardiff is on Friday, December 11th at the Principality Stadium, with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua expected to make their ringwalks at about 1am on Saturday, December 12th. Tickets sold out within an hour on Friday, and the fight will be shown live on Netflix.
I rate this as one of the most anticipated fights British boxing has seen, and the queue shows why: more than 500,000 people waited online for around 80,000 seats. Here is everything fans need on the date, the venue, the money and what is at stake.
Fury vs Joshua Date And Venue: Key Times
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Date | Friday, December 11th |
| Venue | Principality Stadium, Cardiff |
| Gates open | 5pm |
| Main event ringwalks | About 1am on Saturday, December 12th |
| Stadium closes | 3.30am |
| Broadcaster | Netflix, live worldwide |
The times come from plans submitted to Cardiff Council, as reported by the South Wales Argus. A short live music performance is expected before the ringwalks.
Late-night boxing is not new in Cardiff. Joe Calzaghe fought Mikkel Kessler at the same stadium in November 2007 with a 01:00 GMT start, and Ricky Hatton v Kostya Tszyu in Manchester in 2005 began at about 2am so Showtime could screen it on a Saturday evening in the US.
Wembley and Madison Square Garden were the early favourites, but both posed problems before Cardiff emerged. Wembley has no roof, and Sky Sports boxing experts Andy Scott and John Dennen say the December weather is probably a bigger factor than licensing the late start.
Getting home will take planning. Transport for Wales and Great Western Railway said in a joint statement they are working on “a provisional service plan”, with additional late-night services to be finalised and on sale by late November.
Hotels are another matter. The Celtic Manor Resort is charging from £2,600 for one night, and Tŷ Hotel Newport is asking from £1,258, a 1,075 per cent rise on its December 1st price. easyHotel in Cardiff has rooms at £560, against a usual £30 or so.
Fury vs Joshua Tickets: Sell-Out, Prices And Resale
Around 80,000 tickets went on sale at 12:00 BST on Friday and were gone within the hour. Prices ranged from £88.50 to £13,128 including booking fees.
Resale listings appeared almost immediately, with ringside VIP seats advertised at £73,645 and upper-tier seats at £425. Our report on how the Fury–Joshua tickets sold out and prices reached £13,128 has the full breakdown.
Who Is Promoting Fury vs Joshua And What Is The Purse?
The fight is being promoted by Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring in collaboration with UFC chief Dana White. Alalshikh is chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, and Sky’s analysts are clear on the money: he is putting it up and is the promoter.
It nearly stalled. Eleven days before tickets went on sale, Eddie Hearn said Joshua’s contract prevented White having a promotional role. The two fighters then met at a news conference on September 30th.
Fury and Joshua are reported to be sharing a purse worth close to $200million (£151m). Fury is 38 and Joshua is 36, and both are former two-time world champions who signed contracts earlier this year.
Fury vs Joshua Title And Undercard: What We Know
The vacant WBA ‘super’ heavyweight title will be on the line, so, barring a draw, one man becomes a three-time heavyweight champion. Murat Gassiev holds the WBA’s regular belt, and Sky say neither fighter was rated the WBA’s No 1 contender. Our piece on the WBA ‘super’ title being at stake covers Frank Warren’s comments.
Sky’s view is blunt: “It’s the battle of each other and it doesn’t need any belt on the line.”
The rest of the division is settled for now. Agit Kabayel holds the WBC belt, Filip Hrgovic the IBF and Daniel Dubois the WBO, while Oleksandr Usyk keeps the Ring magazine and lineal titles. See the full current heavyweight champions list.
There is no confirmed undercard. Dana White is looking to make Opetaia v Deontay Wilder for the bill, and both Queensberry and Matchroom will have a fighter on it. We have covered the options in Wilder vs Opetaia among five possible fights.
Jack’s Verdict
For me, Fury is the right man to pick, and Joshua is the one with more to lose. Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko on a decision in Germany, held every major heavyweight belt and was devastating against Deontay Wilder in their second and third fights, while Joshua was hurt most recently by Kristian Prenga. Sky’s team say Joshua needs the win more for his legacy, and that pressure matters. Joshua has been 12 rounds five times with no stamina concerns, so this is no foregone conclusion. The best outcome is a clear, decisive winner who then fights Dubois, rather than a Usyk trilogy that Sky doubt is needed.
Your questions answered
When is Fury vs Joshua?
The fight is on Friday, December 11th at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Gates open at 5pm, but Fury and Joshua are not expected to walk out until about 1am on Saturday, December 12th. The stadium is scheduled to close at 3.30am, so expect a very late finish for fans in the building.
Where can I watch Fury vs Joshua?
The fight will be broadcast globally on Netflix. Sky’s experts say the late start is aimed at the huge American audience, who will expect strong viewing figures at that hour. Fury is already on US time, training in America, while Joshua will have to adjust his body clock.
How much were Fury vs Joshua tickets?
Prices ranged from £88.50 to £13,128 including booking fees. About 80,000 tickets were released at 12:00 BST on Friday and sold out within the hour, with more than 500,000 people in the online queue. On resale sites, ringside VIP seats were advertised at £73,645 and upper-tier seats at £425.
Is a world title on the line?
Yes. The WBA has sanctioned the fight for its vacant ‘super’ heavyweight title. Murat Gassiev holds the regular WBA belt. Sky say the WBA has not explained its reasoning. Barring a draw, the winner becomes a three-time world heavyweight champion.
Who is on the Fury vs Joshua undercard?
No undercard fights have been confirmed. Dana White is looking to make Jai Opetaia v Deontay Wilder, and Queensberry and Matchroom will each have a fighter on the bill. Sky’s team said it would be great to see Welsh boxers showcased, but that remains to be seen.
