Ask who the youngest darts world champion is and the answer is not close, not disputed and not likely to change any time soon. Luke Littler was 17 years old when he won the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace in January 2025 — younger than any world champion in the history of the sport, in either code, by a full four years.

Here is how the record was broken, who held it before him, and why it may now be out of reach for good.

The youngest darts world champion: Luke Littler at 17

Littler was born on 21 January 2007. He lifted the Sid Waddell Trophy for the first time on 3 January 2025, beating Michael van Gerwen in the final — eighteen days short of his 18th birthday, and less than two years after leaving the junior circuit.

He then did the harder thing and backed it up. On 3 January 2026, aged 18, he beat Gian van Veen 7–1 to retain the title, and he remains the reigning PDC World Champion and world number one with roughly £3.1m banked on the two-year Order of Merit. Two world titles before his 19th birthday is a scoreline the record books had no template for.

Who held the record before him

Two names mattered, depending on how you count.

In the PDC, the mark belonged to Michael van Gerwen, who won the first of his three world titles on New Year’s Day 2014 at the age of 24. That felt precocious at the time — Van Gerwen had already been the sport’s teenage phenomenon, winning the Winmau World Masters at 17 back in 2006 — and it stood for eleven years.

Across both codes, the youngest world champion was Jelle Klaasen, who won the BDO World Championship at Lakeside in 2006 aged 21. Klaasen’s record had survived nineteen years when Littler walked out at Ally Pally, and Littler did not so much break it as remove it from the conversation.

The five youngest PDC world champions

By age at their first world title:

For scale, look at the other end of the same list. Peter Wright was 49 when he won his first in 2020, Gary Anderson 44 in 2015, Gerwyn Price 35 in 2021 and Michael Smith 32 in 2023. Even Phil Taylor, who went on to win sixteen of them, was 29 when he took his first world title in 1990. The full roll of honour is in our guide to every PDC World Championship winner from 1994 onwards.

The youngest world finalists

Littler holds this one too, and by an even wider margin. He reached the 2024 final as a 16-year-old debutant, losing to Luke Humphries in a match that turned him into a household name overnight and dragged a record television audience with it.

The previous youngest PDC world finalist was Kirk Shepherd, who ran to the 2008 final aged 21 as a qualifier ranked outside the top 100 — one of the great outsider stories of the modern game, and a reminder that reaching the final young and staying at the top are very different achievements.

In the women’s game, Beau Greaves won a WDF world title as a teenager and has spent 2026 making the same point in the PDC, becoming the first woman to win a PDC ranking title in April.

Why the record is likely to stand

Three things had to line up for a 17-year-old to win the world title, and all three are unusual.

The first is the qualifying route. You cannot simply enter the PDC World Championship — you earn a place through the Order of Merit, the ProTour or a qualifying event, which for a teenager means winning on the Development Tour first and then holding your own against professionals. Our explainer on how the World Championship works sets out the qualification paths in full.

The second is the format. Alexandra Palace is a long tournament played over sets, in front of the loudest crowd in the sport, across three weeks that straddle Christmas. It is designed to find out who cracks. Historically, it has favoured players in their late twenties and thirties for exactly that reason.

The third is simply the standard required. Littler arrived averaging over 100 as a matter of routine, which is a level most professionals reach in their prime, if at all. That is not a developmental curve anybody can plan for.

None of that makes the record unbreakable. Darts is currently producing better teenagers than at any point in its history, in part because of what Littler himself has done to participation. But it would take another player of the same order arriving at the same moment — and the sport waited its entire existence for the first one.

The short version

The youngest darts world champion is Luke Littler, PDC champion at 17 in January 2025, ahead of Michael van Gerwen at 24 in the PDC and Jelle Klaasen at 21 across both codes. Littler is also the youngest world finalist, at 16 in 2024. For the full career in one place, read our Luke Littler profile, or the story of how he took the era off Van Gerwen. Official results and the complete roll of honour are published by the PDC.
