Liverpool team news: Frimpong and Szoboszlai latest

Iraola provided a clearer assessment of Liverpool’s injury concerns at Monday’s press conference.

Frimpong has suffered a new muscle injury, with the head coach saying a return before the November international break will be difficult.

Szoboszlai’s problem is in the same area that kept him out of the previous two matches. Iraola said the injury had not worsened, but Liverpool need to allow more recovery time before bringing him back.

Ryan Gravenberch is available for European selection after missing Brentford through a domestic suspension. Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitiké remain longer-term absentees.

There is better news further forward. Alexander Isak returned to the starting side on Saturday and scored the winner in Liverpool’s comeback at Brentford, while Cody Gakpo was back among the substitutes.

That gives Iraola a choice between maintaining the attacking combination that finished the weekend strongly and introducing Gakpo as the schedule intensifies.

Villarreal team news and recent form

Nicolas Pépé remains unavailable, according to Radio Castellón’s latest report. Tajon Buchanan has returned to training, but his availability for Anfield remains uncertain.

Villarreal’s goalless draw with Elche needs context. Iñigo Pérez changed nine players from the side that beat Napoli, with only Alberto Moleiro and Santi Comesaña retaining their places.

The club’s report of the Elche draw describes a succession of chances, including a Moleiro effort cleared off the line. Several players who could return at Anfield therefore had reduced workloads at the weekend.

Their European away record is a concern, however. UEFA records six successive away defeats in continental competition, with two goals scored and 16 conceded.

Liverpool vs Villarreal predicted line-ups

These are editorial predictions. Neither starting XI has been confirmed.

Liverpool, 4-2-3-1: Alisson; Araújo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Muñoz, Wirtz, Barcola; Isak.

Our prediction brings Gravenberch into Saturday’s starting side for Szoboszlai. Muñoz keeps his place after scoring at Brentford, while Gakpo offers an attacking option from the bench. Gomez and Tsimikas are alternatives if Iraola rotates his defence.

Villarreal, projected 4-3-1-2: Luiz Júnior; Mouriño, Pau Navarro, Renato Veiga, Carlos Romero; Saliba, Comesaña, Gueye; Moleiro; Gerard Moreno, Mikautadze.

We expect several of the players rested against Elche to return. Goalkeeper is a selection call: Péter Gulácsi played at the weekend, while Luiz Júnior impressed in the Napoli victory.

Dave’s verdict: Liverpool’s midfield balance matters

Gravenberch’s return offers Liverpool an opportunity to improve their protection behind the attack. With Wirtz looking for space between the lines and Barcola attacking from wide areas, the positioning of the two deeper midfielders could determine how often Villarreal can counter.

Moleiro is the visitor Liverpool should be particularly careful about leaving free. His involvement against Elche suggests the goalless result alone would be a poor guide to Villarreal’s attacking threat.

Liverpool have the stronger attacking options and home advantage, but conceding three at LASK showed why another European win cannot be taken for granted. Our forecast is Liverpool 2-1 Villarreal, with greater control needed alongside the attacking quality.
