Scottish Premiership roundup: Celtic pull clear as Hibs hit bottom and pressure spreads
Celtic finished the weekend four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after their 7-1 demolition of Hearts punished Rangers’ failure to win at Dundee.
Celtic finished the weekend four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after their 7-1 demolition of Hearts punished Rangers’ failure to win at Dundee.
At the other end, Kilmarnock’s comeback victory over Motherwell pushed Hibernian to the bottom. Aberdeen moved within a point of the top six, while Falkirk secured a valuable away win and the Tayside derby ended level.
After nine matches each, the table offers two different pictures: Celtic have created breathing space at the summit, but only five points separate fifth place from last.

| Saturday 17 October | Hibernian v Falkirk | 1-2 |
| Saturday 17 October | Kilmarnock v Motherwell | 3-2 |

| Saturday 17 October | Dundee v Rangers | 2-2 |
| Sunday 18 October | Celtic v Hearts | 7-1 |
Celtic answer their critics and widen both gaps
Celtic’s response to their 4-1 defeat at Benfica could hardly have been more emphatic.
Callum Osmand and Benjamin Nygren scored twice each against Hearts, with Kieran Tierney, Camilo Durán and a Jamie McCart own goal completing the hosts’ scoring. Laurent Mendy replied for the visitors.
Martin O’Neill’s side led 5-1 at half-time, having established control through two early goals from corners before repeatedly punishing Hearts’ defensive mistakes.
The consequences extend beyond the scoreline. Celtic began the weekend two points ahead of Rangers and five ahead of Hearts. Those margins are now four and eight.
As our Celtic–Hearts preview explained, their European difficulties had obscured a strong league record. Eight wins from nine now give O’Neill a firm domestic platform, even with questions still to answer elsewhere.
For Hearts, third place remains intact. Their immediate concern is recovering from a performance that allowed a direct rival to pull further away.
Rangers lose ground, while Dundee look upwards
Rangers had the opportunity to lead the table overnight at Dens Park. Instead, they ended the weekend further behind Celtic.
Badredine Bouanani and Nicolas Raskin overturned Bradley Fink’s opener, but Callum Jones punished Dan Neil’s loss of possession to secure Dundee’s 2-2 draw.
Our Dundee–Rangers report details how a lead earned through two fine goals disappeared nine minutes after Raskin struck.
For Rangers, the frustration is that the recovery was already complete. Protecting a 2-1 advantage would have kept them closer to Celtic; failing to do so made Sunday’s result more damaging.
Dundee’s perspective is considerably brighter. They remain fourth on 14 points, just two behind Hearts, after recovering from a second-half setback against the league’s second-placed side.
Hibs hit bottom, but Motherwell and St Mirren are sliding too
Jacob Murrell’s first-half double earned Falkirk a 2-1 victory at Easter Road. Owen Elding pulled one back before the interval, but Hibernian could not find an equaliser.
Marink Reedijk has now lost both matches since taking charge. Hibs sit bottom on seven points, with the change of head coach yet to produce a result.
Falkirk’s second league victory of the season moved them to nine points. Both wins have come against Edinburgh opposition, following their earlier success against Hearts.
Kilmarnock’s escape from last place required a fightback. Greg Kiltie opened the scoring against Motherwell, whose goals from Alex Lowry and Seb Palmer-Houlden turned the match around. Tyreece John-Jules equalised before Kiltie’s second secured a 3-2 win.
Killie also received a significant reprieve when George Stanger’s initial red card was reduced to yellow following VAR review, as the club’s report confirms.
Motherwell have now lost five consecutive league games. They remain above Kilmarnock on goal difference, but both have eight points — only one more than Hibs.
St Mirren’s defeat at Aberdeen was also their fifth successive league loss. Their ten points provide a small cushion, but that sequence shows why the pressure at the bottom extends beyond Easter Road.
Aberdeen close on the top six
Aberdeen’s 3-1 victory over St Mirren moved them above their opponents and into seventh.
Brad Lyons’ early opener was cancelled out by Eseosa Sule before Kevin Nisbet restored the lead after the break. Nisbet’s penalty was saved by Jacob Chapman, but the striker scored from the rebound. Substitute Ayoub Mouloua then added the third.
Stephen Robinson’s changes helped decide the game. Tony Yogane won the penalty after coming on at half-time, while Mouloua made a swift impact from the bench.
Aberdeen now sit one point behind both St Johnstone and Dundee United. A difficult first half at Pittodrie ended with a result that leaves the top six firmly within reach.
A point keeps the Tayside pair together
St Johnstone and Dundee United remain fifth and sixth respectively after drawing 1-1 at McDiarmid Park.
Josh Fowler’s 21st-minute opener was cancelled out by Lyall Cameron with 11 minutes remaining. Saints goalkeeper Toby Steward then denied Zach Sapsford and Cameron in a late double save to preserve the point.
Both teams have 12 points, but Aberdeen’s win leaves little room for complacency. The draw maintained their positions while allowing the chasing side to close.

What the weekend sets up next
Several of the next fixtures directly test the positions established this weekend.
Dundee United host Aberdeen on Saturday 24 October, putting sixth against seventh with only a point between them. Falkirk welcome Kilmarnock, giving two of Saturday’s winners an immediate opportunity to build momentum against a nearby rival.
Rangers host St Johnstone the same afternoon. Their task is to respond quickly after surrendering ground at Dens Park.
Celtic have earned room for error that their nearest challengers currently lack. Further down, the margins remain small enough for one result to change the picture sharply — but the repeated defeats at Hibs, Motherwell and St Mirren make the need for that result increasingly pressing.
