Emi Martinez says his operation went well and he expects to return “in a few weeks” after the Chelsea goalkeeper was stretchered off during Saturday’s win at Everton.
The Argentina international posted an update from hospital following his second-half collision with Jarrad Branthwaite at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
“Thank you for all the messages, the operation went well,” he wrote on Instagram. “We’ll be back in a few weeks.”
Emi Martinez injury: return date remains unconfirmed
Reports in Argentina have identified a fractured jaw, with journalist César Luis Merlo reporting a possible six-to-seven-week absence. Chelsea have not announced a recovery timetable, so that estimate remains separate from Martínez’s own assessment.
Martínez received lengthy treatment before leaving the pitch during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton.
In Chelsea’s initial update, Xabi Alonso said the goalkeeper had left the stadium conscious and was undergoing precautionary hospital tests. The head coach also confirmed he had suffered concussion.
Penders provides Chelsea’s immediate cover
Mike Penders replaced Martínez for his Premier League debut and helped Chelsea complete their first league clean sheet since January.
Alonso subsequently praised the Belgian’s bravery and personality, expressing confidence in the goalkeeper who had already featured in the cup competitions. Penders is therefore the immediate option to deputise, although the next starting line-up has not been confirmed.
The injury adds a selection concern after Alonso challenged Chelsea to build on their defensive improvement. For now, Martínez’s successful operation offers encouragement while the club awaits clarity over his return.
