Xabi Alonso demands more after Chelsea end clean-sheet wait

Xabi Alonso has challenged Chelsea to make clean sheets a regular feature of their season after praising the maturity of their 2-0 victory at Everton.

Pedro Neto scored both goals at Hill Dickinson Stadium, striking immediately after half-time and again in the 90th minute to secure three points.

For Alonso, the satisfaction also came from how Chelsea handled an away fixture in which they had to withstand pressure before establishing their advantage.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, the Chelsea head coach described his team as “mature” and called for the same standards in the weeks ahead.

Xabi Alonso wants ‘many more’ Chelsea clean sheets

Chelsea’s defensive record had become a persistent concern. This was their first Premier League clean sheet since January, giving Saturday’s result significance beyond the three points.

Alonso acknowledged that Everton had tested his side, particularly before the interval.

“We looked in control of the game. There were moments, for sure, when we had to defend, especially first half,” he said.

“To win away is always tough, and we got the clean sheet. We knew it was a matter of time and finally we got it.”

His next message was about making that achievement repeatable.

“We need to get many more clean sheets for the rest of the league games. But for sure, the first one of the season feels good.”

That is a fair measure of the challenge ahead. One successful afternoon provides encouragement, but Chelsea need a sequence of stronger defensive performances before they can regard the problem as resolved.

Alonso’s comments suggest he recognises that distinction. He welcomed the result while immediately setting out what must follow.

“Now we need to keep going this way, working well, being serious, knowing that wherever we go we can play in an efficient and professional way like we did today.”

Pedro Neto earns praise beyond his two goals

Neto supplied the decisive attacking contributions, but Alonso’s assessment extended beyond the finishes.

The Portugal international’s selection gave Chelsea width alongside an attack featuring Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro, as detailed in our confirmed Everton and Chelsea line-ups.

Asked about his match-winner, Alonso placed Neto’s contribution within the wider team effort.

“He’s as important as the rest. Pedro has great qualities. He’s always a threat. He has great competitive level. He can run, he can do 1v1, he can score goals.”

Those qualities explain why Neto can influence a match in several ways. His ability to carry the ball and take on defenders gives opponents something to consider even before he reaches a shooting position.

At Everton, the goals made his contribution decisive. Alonso’s praise underlined why he values the work around those moments too.

Chelsea have a defensive performance to build on

The victory followed Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth, when Jordan Henderson’s influence drew praise from Alonso.

Together, the results offer encouragement: Chelsea have followed a convincing attacking display with an away win in which they also protected their goal.

The next test is consistency. Alonso has now seen his team deliver the efficient, professional performance he wanted. His challenge is to make that the standard Chelsea maintain.
