Gareth Southgate says he does not expect to return to Premier League management, explaining that his appetite for the job has changed since leaving England.
The former national team manager addressed his future on The Amol Rajan Connection, having previously been linked with Manchester United and Crystal Palace.
Gareth Southgate explains his decision
Asked whether he could envisage managing in the Premier League again, Southgate said: “I don’t see a scenario where I do that.”
In comments reported by The Guardian, he explained that even victories brought only brief satisfaction towards the end of his England tenure.
Southgate also revealed that he had barely watched football and had not attended a match since seeing boyhood club Palace win the 2025 FA Cup final.
The 56-year-old left England following their Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain. His only previous spell in club management was with Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009.
As The Times reports, Southgate has enjoyed exploring work outside coaching, including a documentary examining the challenges facing young men.
Manchester United speculation continues
His comments come as Fabian Hürzeler emerges as a reported Manchester United candidate amid pressure on Michael Carrick.
Carrick remains in charge, with United preparing to visit Leeds on Sunday. Reports linking other managers do not establish that a change has been agreed.
