Fabian Hurzeler emerges as Man Utd candidate amid Michael Carrick pressure

Fabian Hurzeler is reportedly among Manchester United’s options if they decide to replace Michael Carrick, with the Brighton head coach attracting attention at Old Trafford.

Samuel Luckhurst reports in The Sun that Hürzeler is regarded as the leading candidate among Premier League managers. The report says United are continuing to back Carrick.

Separately, talkSPORT reports that Hürzeler has support from director of football Jason Wilcox, with Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte also under consideration.

Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton contract matters

Brighton would have a significant say in any potential move.

The club announced a new contract for Hürzeler in May, extending his deal until June 2029. At the time, chairman Tony Bloom praised his clear playing identity and described the agreement as a commitment to their shared long-term plans.

That leaves United looking at an employed coach with almost three years remaining on his contract. The reports of interest do not establish that an approach or agreement has been made.

Brighton are third in the Premier League after four wins from six matches. Hürzeler’s immediate task is balancing that start with European football, as explored in our analysis of his demand for a more ruthless Brighton.

Carrick faces Leeds test

United’s 2–0 defeat at Atletico Madrid extended their winless run to five matches across all competitions.

It also prompted Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s recruitment, although the defender subsequently expressed confidence in Carrick and accepted that the players must improve.

United next visit Leeds on Sunday 18 October. For now, Carrick remains responsible for finding a response while speculation over potential successors continues.
