Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid as an early Pablo Barrios goal and a second-half red card for Leny Yoro left Michael Carrick’s side with another difficult night.

Barrios struck inside the opening minute at the Metropolitano, before Atletico added their second in the 79th minute after United had been reduced to 10 men.

The result leaves United on three points from their first two Champions League league-phase matches, following their opening victory over Sabah.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Man Utd: Early blow proves costly

United were immediately forced to chase the game when Barrios put Diego Simeone’s side ahead.

Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford had opportunities to respond, but United reached half-time a goal behind.

Atletico thought they had doubled their advantage through Johnny Cardoso shortly before the interval, only for VAR to identify a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up.

Both teams subsequently struck the woodwork. Julian Alvarez hit a post for Atletico, while Bruno Fernandes rattled the crossbar as United searched for an equaliser.

Yoro dismissal damages comeback hopes

Yoro was dismissed following a VAR review of his challenge on Jonathan David, with United still trailing by a single goal.

Atletico then made their numerical advantage count, scoring again in the 79th minute to put the contest beyond Carrick’s team.

After the questions surrounding United’s pressing against Tottenham, this was another setback rather than the response their manager needed.
