Lexi Potter will make her senior England debut against Greece after Sarina Wiegman named the Chelsea midfielder in her starting XI for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying play-off.
The Lionesses take a 3-1 aggregate lead into the second leg at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, with kick-off at 7.30pm BST.
Potter replaces Laura Blindkilde Brown in midfield, while Jess Carter comes in for Esme Morgan as Wiegman makes two changes.
Lexi Potter earns England opportunity
Potter starts alongside Chelsea team-mate Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway, turning her first senior call-up into an opportunity from the outset.
Her selection follows an impressive start to the club season, with Wiegman highlighting her Chelsea performances when announcing the squad.
That familiarity with Walsh was one of the possibilities explored in Dave.Sport’s analysis of where Potter could fit into England’s midfield.
Hannah Hampton and Lauren James also start, giving Chelsea four players in the England XI.
England team confirmed for Greece second leg
The official England team announcement confirms the following side.
England: Hampton, Le Tissier, Williamson (c), Carter, Greenwood, Walsh, Stanway, Potter, Russo, James, Hemp.
Substitutes: Charles, Keating, Blindkilde Brown, Morgan, Fisk, Park, Clinton, Mead, Parkinson, Moorhouse, Godfrey, Toone.
Stanway, Maya Le Tissier and Alessia Russo scored in Friday’s first-leg victory in Crete, before Kallisti Brouksair reduced the deficit for Greece.
England must complete the job in Leicester to reach the final qualifying play-off round. Progress tonight would keep their bid to reach next summer’s tournament in Brazil on course, rather than secure qualification outright.
