Ranking the top 5 darts players in history is no easy feat. Darts has evolved from a pub pastime to a high-pressure professional sport, and every era has its titans. However, when looking at titles, longevity, and impact, these five individuals stand head and shoulders above the rest.
1. Phil “The Power” Taylor
There is no debate: Phil Taylor is the greatest to ever pick up a flight. With a record 16 World Championships and over 80 major titles, Taylor’s dominance from 1990 to 2018 was unprecedented. He was the first player to hit two nine-darters in a single match and essentially “built” the modern PDC with his excellence.
2. Michael van Gerwen
“Mighty Mike” is the only player to truly rival Taylor’s peak. The Dutchman became the youngest ever World Champion in 2014 and has since amassed three World titles and a record number of Pro Tour wins. At his best, Van Gerwen’s scoring power is terrifying, often averaging over 110 in televised matches.
3. Eric Bristow
“The Crafty Cockney” was the first true superstar of the game. Winning five world titles in the 1980s, Bristow was the face of the BDO’s golden age. More importantly, he mentored a young Phil Taylor, meaning his influence on the sport is doubled.
4. Raymond van Barneveld
“Barney” is the man who made darts a Dutch national sport. A five-time World Champion (four BDO, one PDC), his 2007 final against Phil Taylor is widely considered the greatest match ever played. His smooth, rhythmic throw remains the blueprint for many aspiring professionals.
5. John Lowe
John Lowe represents the ultimate professional. He was the first player to win world titles in three different decades (1979, 1987, 1993) and the first to hit a televised nine-dart finish. His longevity and calm under pressure earn him the final spot in our top 5.
