- Brentford beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night. Their first home win over Chelsea since 1938.
- Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring in the 61st minute, with Igor Thiago and substitute Fabio Carvalho completing the rout as Brentford climbed to third and stayed unbeaten.
- Chelsea are now three league games without a win and have shipped 12 goals in five games, more than any other side, albeit from a game more.
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea was not a smash-and-grab. It was 61 minutes of an even contest followed by a collapse, and it left Xabi Alonso saying that “everything” about his side’s performance was disappointing. Keith Andrews’ Brentford are unbeaten and third; Chelsea, five games into the Alonso era, have the worst defensive record in the Premier League.
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea: how the visitors unravelled
It was level until Mikkel Damsgaard whipped in the corner that led to Anthony’s opener just after the hour. Thiago was goalless in his previous four. Carvalho off the bench did the rest. At full time Andrews roared at the sky. Completely understandable, given Brentford had not beaten Chelsea at home in 88 years. “It was a performance I felt was bubbling,” he said. “I could see it in the players’ eyes over the last two days. They were very focused, very determined.”
Chelsea were without Joao Pedro, ruled out with a knee injury. The absence gutted an attack that had been carrying them. Danny Welbeck deputised without impact. The expert angle: Alonso has 11 debutants and no shape
The damning number is not 3-0, it is five. Alonso is only the sixth manager to concede two or more goals in each of his first five Premier League matches in charge. Some of that mess is inherited. 11 new signings arrived this summer. He has now handed out 11 debuts. Two of them at Brentford in Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, the first 16-year-old to play for Chelsea in the Premier League, and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson against his former club. But five games in, experimenting with systems has produced no tactical coherence. A team that could not defend now cannot score either.
The contrast a few miles west is brutal. Brentford spend a fraction of what Chelsea do and know exactly what they are. Compact, unpredictable on the counter, and ruthless once the game tilts. Chelsea, fresh from Todd Boehly and Mark Walter agreeing to sell their 12.8% stake to Clearlake Capital, remain a trading hub in search of a football team. A calmer boardroom will not fix a backline. Alonso now has a three-week international break to find a structure. The luxury of blaming the previous regime is running out fast.
