Dara O’Shea says Ipswich’s late winner against Fulham came from a rehearsed routine as the captain finally scored his first home goal for the club.
Dara O’Shea says Ipswich’s late winner against Fulham came from a rehearsed routine as the captain finally scored his first home goal for the club.
The defender headed in Jack Clarke’s free-kick in stoppage time to complete a 2-1 comeback victory at Portman Road, after Abdoul Ouattara had equalised in the 88th minute.
It was O’Shea’s second Ipswich goal and his first at Portman Road, a milestone he admitted had taken longer than he wanted.
Dara O’Shea explains Ipswich’s set-piece breakthrough
“It’s always great to see a goal that you work so hard on in training come to life,” O’Shea told TWTD.
The skipper revealed that Ipswich had devoted considerable time to set pieces during the week. His winner arrived in the first match since analyst Adam Berry joined from Rangers.
O’Shea said the movement for his header had been practised, with his positioning helping him find space while staying onside.
He also revealed that Leif Davis had been teasing him about his wait for a home goal, and expressed a determination to contribute more in attack.
Late turnaround lifts Ipswich
Ryan Sessegnon’s 55th-minute opener had left Ipswich chasing the game before their two defenders transformed the result.
Clarke supplied the decisive delivery after coming off the bench, while Ouattara’s equaliser gave Gary O’Neil’s side the opportunity to push for victory.
The comeback, featured in our Saturday Premier League talking points, took Ipswich to nine points from six matches.
O’Shea believes their ability to keep pushing late in games reflects the squad’s fitness and character, offering further confidence for the weeks ahead.
