Patrick Dorgu headed a 96th-minute equaliser as Manchester United recovered from two separate two-goal deficits to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa in an extraordinary finish at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s side were still trailing 4-2 when the match entered stoppage time. Joshua Zirkzee gave them hope before Dorgu completed the rescue, turning an afternoon of defensive mistakes into an unlikely point.

Villa had led 2-0 inside four minutes and restored that cushion early in the second half. They will leave wondering how a match they twice appeared to have under control escaped them.

Dorgu completes stoppage-time turnaround

Dorgu was involved in both late goals, supplying the cross which Zirkzee converted before heading in himself from a corner.

United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had joined the attack for the final push. At the other end, Zion Suzuki failed to deal with the delivery and Dorgu took advantage to make it 4-4.

The celebrations reflected the improbability of the escape. United had spent much of the afternoon repairing damage of their own making, but Villa could not withstand their final surge.

Villa punish disastrous Man Utd start

Alysson put Villa ahead inside the opening minute, meeting John McGinn’s delivery with a shot which beat Lammens.

Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, reacting quickest when the United goalkeeper could not hold another effort from Alysson.

United found a route back when Boubacar Kamara fouled Matheus Cunha in the penalty area. Bruno Fernandes converted the spot-kick, cutting Villa’s lead and giving the hosts something to build on.

Youri Tielemans then scored his first United goal against his former club, finishing before the interval to bring the teams level at 2-2.

McGinn and Goretzka restore Villa’s advantage

The recovery did not bring stability. Harry Maguire was replaced by Ayden Heaven at half-time, and United conceded again soon after the restart.

Diogo Dalot brought down Alysson inside the area, allowing McGinn to restore Villa’s lead from the penalty spot.

Leon Goretzka made it 4-2 in the 53rd minute. Leny Yoro’s attempted clearance from a free-kick caused further problems in the United penalty area, and the midfielder finished amid the scramble.

For the second time, United needed two goals simply to get back on terms.

Man Utd 4-4 Aston Villa: Relief without reassurance

Carrick turned to his substitutes, with Dorgu and Zirkzee ultimately supplying the decisive contributions. The late response earned a point, but conceding four goals at home leaves substantial questions about United’s defending.

For Unai Emery, the frustration will be different. Villa repeatedly found a way through United, only to lose their advantage twice and concede two goals in stoppage time.

United’s persistence was rewarded. Their defending gave them far too much to overcome.
