Crystal Palace rescued a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim as Daichi Kamada struck in stoppage time after Adam Wharton’s dismissal had left the hosts chasing the game with 10 men.
Alexander Prass gave Hoffenheim a seventh-minute lead at Selhurst Park. Wharton’s second yellow in the 77th minute made Palace’s task harder, but Kamada’s 91st-minute equaliser denied the visitors victory.
The draw takes Pierre Sage’s side to five points from four Europa League matches, with Hoffenheim on four.
Crystal Palace caught out by Hoffenheim counter
Palace briefly thought they had made the perfect start when Kamada found the net in the fourth minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Three minutes later, Hoffenheim were ahead. Palace lost possession near the visitors’ penalty area and were exposed by a quick break, with Tim Lemperle finding Prass.
The Austrian’s left-footed effort slipped underneath Dean Henderson and over the line, leaving Palace with another early setback to overcome.
Henderson saved from Andrej Kramaric and Wouter Burger, while Kamada sent an effort narrowly wide after being picked out by Yeremy Pino.
Jean-Philippe Mateta also tested Oliver Baumann, but Palace went into the interval behind.
Wharton sees red before Kamada’s late rescue
Sage turned to Eddie Nketiah and Óscar Mingueza after the break as Palace searched for a response.
Wharton was then dismissed for a second bookable offence following contact with Burger. Kamada eventually broke through in added time, squeezing his shot through the crowded area and past Baumann to secure a late point for Palace.
What the result means for Palace
Palace remain without a European victory since their opening 4-0 win over Lech Poznan. That result has been followed by defeat at Lyon and draws against Besiktas and Hoffenheim.
Fit-again Quinten Timber returned to the starting side, with Dean Henderson captaining the team.
The late equaliser offers encouragement before Liverpool visit Selhurst Park on Sunday 8 November. Palace still need to improve their Premier League results after three successive defeats, but Kamada ensured this European night ended with a point.
