Man Utd manager Michael Carrick praised Shea Lacey’s willingness to defend at right-back after the teenager helped create the decisive goal in the 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma.
Lacey supplied Matheus Cunha for the winner at Old Trafford, then helped United protect their lead after the Brazilian’s late dismissal.
His attacking contribution attracted the headlines, but Carrick highlighted the other side of his performance.
Michael Carrick praises Shea Lacey’s defensive work
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Carrick said: “I was just as happy seeing him defending as a right-back when we needed that.”
The United manager said Lacey’s ability to move inside and find a pass was already familiar to the coaching staff. His readiness to help defensively showed another quality Carrick wants from a developing player.
Carrick also felt the substitute’s introduction lifted those around him, while making clear he did not want to place excessive expectations on the youngster.
Lacey helps Manchester United complete Roma comeback
United were two goals behind at half-time before Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit with a retaken penalty.
Cunha equalised in the 83rd minute and scored again three minutes later, finishing from Lacey’s pass to complete the turnaround.
The Brazilian subsequently received a second yellow card, leaving United to defend their narrow advantage with 10 players.
Our Manchester United vs Roma match report covers the comeback and its frantic finish.
What does the performance mean for Lacey?
Lacey has strengthened his case for further opportunities, although Carrick has not confirmed his role against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The significance of the cameo was its range. He helped United find a winning goal, then adapted when the team’s priority changed to protecting the result.
That gives Carrick something concrete to consider when selecting his next squad. It does not yet establish Lacey as a regular starter.
