Manchester City had chances to rescue this game. What they could not do was recover from another mistake at the back.

Yasin Ayari’s early goal gave Brighton a lead they defended to the finish, leaving Enzo Maresca with successive Premier League defeats and a familiar frustration after last weekend’s loss at Aston Villa.

The Man City vs Brighton analysis centres on both penalty areas. City failed to take their opportunities, but their defending had already given them a problem to solve. Brighton deserve credit for making sure they never solved it.

Our Manchester City 0-1 Brighton match report covers the key incidents from the Etihad.

Another early setback leaves City chasing

There was little sophistication about the goal City conceded. Matheus Nunes missed a low delivery, the ball struck Maxim De Cuyper and Ayari was left with a close-range finish.

Brighton had their opening. City had almost the entire match to respond, but the concession allowed the visitors to protect something rather than chase it.

That is the concern behind Maresca’s frustration. His side are making matches harder for themselves before their attacking players have found their rhythm.

“We are conceding silly goals and we can avoid that,” he said in his post-match assessment.

Maresca also pointed to similar lapses in recent games. He clearly sees more here than an isolated mistake, and better finishing alone will not resolve it.

Man City vs Brighton analysis: chances go begging

City registered 21 shots, with six on target, according to Reuters’ report. There was enough attacking activity to keep Brighton working, but too little of it ended with the finish City needed.

Iliman Ndiaye headed narrowly wide before half-time. Nunes was denied by Bart Verbruggen after the break, and Nico O’Reilly missed a late headed chance.

Those opportunities spread the responsibility beyond Erling Haaland. City had other players arriving in scoring positions; none could supply the goal that would have changed the closing stages.

Maresca felt his team had done enough to take something from the match. The missed chances support that argument, but they will offer little comfort after a second defeat in a row.

Cherki gives City something to build on

Rayan Cherki provided one of City’s better moments after coming off the bench, finding Nunes with a pass that sent him through inside the area.

Verbruggen saved, but the move showed the value of a well-timed run meeting a precise pass. It forced Brighton to defend a chance close to goal rather than another attack in front of them.

That is a passage worth returning to when Maresca reviews the game. The answer cannot simply be to demand more shots. City need to reproduce the combinations that give their players a clearer sight of goal.

The club’s match report details Cherki’s contribution, while our confirmed line-ups show the options Maresca had available.

Brighton earn their clean sheet

For all City’s frustration, this was also a victory earned through Brighton’s defending.

Verbruggen admitted afterwards that the visitors had lost control during the latter stages. They still kept their lead. When City did find a way through, the goalkeeper was there to make an important save.

Brighton also passed up a chance to make the afternoon more comfortable when De Cuyper fired over after the interval. Their failure to add a second meant they had to withstand the pressure until the final whistle.

They did so, and left with a clean sheet as well as three points. It was a reminder that their threat extends beyond what they can produce going forward.

City will expect the goals to return. Maresca’s more immediate task is to stop his side giving opponents such a useful head start.
