Stormers 33–7 Ulster: the result

How the five tries came

Ulster scored first and led for a while. David McCann powered over from close range, and Jack Murphy converted, but that proved to be Ulster’s only score of the afternoon.

Stormers regrouped and established set-piece dominance. Their scrum got them out of their own 22, and three consecutive maul penalties put them in position to strike. JD Schickerling went over to level the match at 7–7, and Paul de Villiers charged down a Murphy clearance to touch down and give the hosts a 12–7 lead at half-time.

Evan Roos then broke the line on his own 22 and sprinted clear early in the second half. With Stormers hunting the bonus point, Ruhan Nel claimed Yaqeen Ahmed’s cross-kick to score, and Ahmed added a fifth try and a fourth conversion at the death for a personal haul of 13 points.

Richie Murphy had named Rob Herring and James Hume for their first appearances of the season, with David McCann captaining the side. Ulster’s front row was Eric O’Sullivan, Herring and Keynan Knox, with Ben Donnell and Eli Snyman at lock and Cormac Izuchukwu, McCann and Juarno Augustus in the back row.

What the Stormers vs Ulster result means for Ulster

Ulster are still without a win in five United Rugby Championship matches this season. They have drawn with Glasgow Warriors and Munster and lost to Edinburgh, Bulls and now Stormers, and their next fixture is away to Cardiff on 5 December, after the November international break.

It was Ulster’s second defeat on their South Africa tour, following the 34–26 loss to Bulls at Loftus Versfeld a week earlier. Players called up to the Ireland squad for the Nations Championship had left for national camp before the trip, and Ulster added Tom Brigg, Sam Crean, Jed Findlay, Rob Herring, James Hume, Martin Moloney and Zac Ward to the travelling party in Cape Town.

Stormers have now won four of their five United Rugby Championship matches, with every one of those wins at home in October carrying a bonus point. Ulster have two draws and three defeats from five and go into the international window without a win.

Both sides resume their league campaigns in December, when Ulster travel to Cardiff. For Ulster the task is to turn a run of draws and defeats into wins before the competition breaks again.
