Freddie Sears has backed Scott Parker to get West Ham’s promotion push back on track, describing his appointment as “just what the club needed” and his former team-mate as one of the best captains he played under.
Speaking exclusively to Dave.Sport, the former Hammers striker welcomed Parker’s return as head coach and said his record of three Championship promotions made him well suited to the job.
Sears, now an Under-18s coach at West Ham, played alongside Parker after breaking into the first team at Upton Park. He believes supporters will get behind their former captain as he prepares to take charge at Cardiff City on Wednesday night.
“I’m sure the fans will get behind him, and I think he’s a really good appointment for the club, just what the club needed at this time in the Championship,” Sears told Dave.Sport.
Freddie Sears: Parker was ‘one of the best captains I played under’
Sears’ endorsement comes from his experience of sharing a dressing room with Parker, whose professionalism and ability to motivate left a lasting impression.
“Scotty was a top guy, a real good professional, probably one of the best captains I played under,” he said.
“Really could motivate and, yeah, led by example.”
Parker started in midfield on the afternoon Sears made his memorable West Ham debut against Blackburn Rovers in March 2008. The 18-year-old came off the bench to score the winner in a 2–1 victory at Upton Park, although Parker had been substituted before the goal.
The pair went on to play together during Parker’s first spell at the club. Sears has since returned to the academy, where he now helps develop the next generation of West Ham players.
Three promotions give Sears confidence in Parker appointment
West Ham have turned to Parker after sacking Nuno Espírito Santo following successive home defeats, with the club eighth in the Championship.
Parker has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. His previous promotions came with Fulham in 2020, Bournemouth in 2022 and Burnley in 2025.
For Sears, that experience is central to the appeal of the appointment.
“He’s got obviously proven history in the Championship, three promotions, and I’m sure the fans will be happy to have Scotty back,” he said.
“He’s got proven experience in the Championship, which I think West Ham need at the minute.”

Cardiff away offers immediate test for new West Ham head coach
Parker has little time to prepare for his first match. West Ham visit Cardiff on Wednesday 4 November, with kick-off at 7.45pm GMT, before travelling to Blackburn on Saturday.
“Just seen he’s taking the team for tonight, so what a game to start, Cardiff away,” Sears said.
The club’s appointment announcement confirmed Parker would take charge immediately, beginning his latest attempt to guide a Championship side into the Premier League.
