Shane Duffy Derby deal: the defender has joined on an initial two-month contract, giving John Eustace another defensive option ahead of Saturday’s Championship trip to Millwall.
The 34-year-old completed the move after a trial period and is available for the weekend, Derby confirmed on Thursday. He had been without a club since leaving Norwich City in the summer.
Shane Duffy Derby deal follows defensive setbacks
Duffy arrives with Derby managing injuries at centre-back and the loss of Dion Sanderson to suspension. The move gives Eustace an experienced specialist in a position where his options have been stretched.
Sondre Langås faces a lengthy absence after suffering a groin injury against Queens Park Rangers. In an update published by Derby on 15 October, Eustace said the Norwegian would require surgery and was expected to miss around 12 or 13 weeks.
Langås had played every minute of Derby’s league campaign before being forced off after 12 minutes at Loftus Road.
“It’s a big blow for us. Sondre is a warrior,” Eustace told RamsTV at the time.
Eiran Cashin and Matt Clarke are also among Derby’s injured defenders, The72 reported on Thursday. Ryan Nyambe has been used centrally as Eustace adjusts his defence to cope with the absences.
Sanderson dismissal adds to Millwall selection problem
Dion Sanderson is suspended for Saturday after his dismissal at Bramall Lane. The defender received a second booking in the 66th minute of Derby’s 1-1 draw at Sheffield United, adding to Eustace’s selection problems at centre-back.
Bobby Clark had given the Rams a first-half lead, but Patrick Bamford equalised after the dismissal. Goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström made important late saves to preserve the draw, according to Derby’s match report.
Jack Robinson made his Derby debut from the bench at Bramall Lane, while Max Johnston also came on. Duffy’s arrival adds another option before Eustace chooses his side for Millwall.
What experience does Duffy bring?
Duffy has made 217 Championship appearances and played Premier League football for Brighton, Everton and Fulham. Derby’s announcement also lists 61 Republic of Ireland caps and seven international goals.
His six-season spell with Brighton brought more than 150 appearances, including 109 in the Premier League. Norwich were his most recent club before the move to Pride Park.
The initial agreement is short-term, with Derby confirming two months rather than a deal for the rest of the season.
