Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension to remain England head coach until the end of Euro 2029.
Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension to remain England head coach until the end of Euro 2029.
Her previous agreement was due to expire after next summer’s World Cup. The new deal gives her the opportunity to lead the Lionesses’ pursuit of a third consecutive European title.
Wiegman has guided England to European Championship victories in 2022 and 2025, either side of their defeat by Spain in the 2023 World Cup final.
What Sarina Wiegman said about her new contract
Speaking in the FA’s announcement, Wiegman said: “I’m so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football.”
Assistants Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit will continue alongside her, as will goalkeeping coach Darren Ward.
Wiegman took charge in September 2021, meaning the extension could take her tenure to eight years. She had already won Euro 2017 with the Netherlands before moving to England.
World Cup qualification remains the immediate task
England still need to beat Ukraine over two legs to secure their place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
The Lionesses reached the final qualifying round with an 8-1 aggregate victory over Greece, completing the tie with a 5-0 win in Leicester in which Lauren James and Alessia Russo scored twice each.
England will play Ukraine away first before hosting the decisive return at Wembley on Saturday 5 December, kicking off at 5.30pm GMT.
Beyond that, the 2027 Nations League provides a route to qualification for Team GB at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, before England turn towards Euro 2029 in Germany.
