Ross Barkley faces a fitness assessment before Aston Villa’s trip to Newcastle, just days after scoring twice in their Champions League victory over Fenerbahce.
Unai Emery confirmed on Friday that Barkley and George Hemmings would both be checked before Saturday’s Premier League match at St James’ Park.
The uncertainty follows Barkley’s contribution to Villa’s 6–0 win over Fenerbahce, when he joined Nicolas Jackson in scoring twice.
Villa’s official team-news update leaves his availability unresolved ahead of the 5.30pm kick-off.
Ross Barkley fitness check gives Emery another decision
Barkley experienced discomfort during Wednesday’s match, according to Emery’s pre-match update reported by Hayters. His condition will determine whether he can remain involved after an impressive European performance.
Hemmings is also approaching a possible return, although his availability has not been confirmed.
“George Hemmings is close to joining us, maybe joining us this afternoon,” Emery said, as reported by Hayters.
Ian Maatsen and Matteo Ruggeri remain unavailable, while Amadou Onana continues his longer-term recovery.
The absences leave Emery managing decisions across midfield and defence as Villa attempt to carry their European form into the Premier League.
Johan Manzambi’s growing influence offers encouragement after he opened the scoring against Fenerbahce. However, Barkley’s fitness remains a separate question before Emery selects his side for Newcastle.
Neither Barkley nor Hemmings has been ruled out in Friday’s update.
