Kobbie Mainoo: Tuchel admits mistake over World Cup snub
Thomas Tuchel admits it hurt him to leave Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo unused at the World Cup as he recalls him for the Nations League.
- Kobbie Mainoo played zero minutes for England at the World Cup despite staying in Thomas Tuchel’s squad throughout the tournament.
- Tuchel says it hurt him to leave the Manchester United midfielder out, admitting “that was totally on me.”
- Mainoo is recalled for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.
Kobbie Mainoo: how the World Cup omission happened
Kobbie Mainoo did not play a single minute of England’s World Cup campaign, despite remaining in Thomas Tuchel’s squad from the opening game to the final whistle.
That is the number United fans have been stuck on since the tournament ended, and Tuchel has now explained how it happened in detail, as set out in our full report on Mainoo’s World Cup omission.
The short version is competition. Tuchel picked Reece James, Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice ahead of Mainoo through central midfield, and none of the three gave him a reason to change his mind. Mainoo trained well, stayed patient, and waited for an opportunity that never arrived on the pitch.
It nearly did. Mainoo was in contention for the third-place play-off against France, the one fixture where a place seemed realistic.
An injury picked up in the build-up ruled him out before kick-off, closing the door on the tournament without him touching the ball in a competitive minute.
Not everyone thought that match was worth chasing anyway. Former United midfielder Nicky Butt said Mainoo should have refused to play in the third-place play-off, calling it a “stupid, nonsense game.”
That is Butt’s personal view rather than anything Tuchel or the England camp has echoed, and it is worth remembering United’s man was left out through injury rather than choice in the end.
The expert angle: Tuchel admits midfield selection error
Here is the claim that matters: Tuchel is not hiding behind form, fitness or a crowded fixture list.
He is calling it a selection error, and he is putting his own name to it.
Speaking to the press, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, Tuchel said: “I expect him to be on the pitch and it’s my duty to get him on the pitch. That was totally on me.” That is about as direct as a head coach gets in public. There is no mention of Mainoo’s application or attitude as the problem, because Tuchel says the opposite was true.
“He didn’t put a foot wrong during the World Cup. He was class in behaviour on the training pitch,” Tuchel said. Praise like that, paired with zero minutes, is exactly why the story has legs among United supporters. A player can do everything right in training and still finish a World Cup without a kick.
Tuchel went further on the thinking behind his team sheets:
“There was big competition; we played Reece [James] in central midfield also. Elliot Anderson is amazing for us, Declan Rice is a very unique player. We trusted them more than we trusted Kobbie. It was difficult for him. It was on me.” T
hat is three specific names, not a vague reference to squad depth, and it tells United fans exactly who was chosen ahead of their midfielder.
On the injury before the France match, Tuchel added: “He got injured before the France game so we couldn’t even give him minutes there, which hurt me. Maybe he was more hurt than me but it was my responsibility and it’s my responsibility to reward him for that.”
The word “reward” is doing a lot of work there. It points straight at what came next.
What happens next for Mainoo in the Nations League
Tuchel has recalled Mainoo for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia. After a tournament spent watching from the bench, the 21 year old gets an immediate route back into contention rather than a wait for the next international window.
The question now is whether Tuchel follows through with minutes, not just a squad number.
He has already named the three players who kept Mainoo out in the summer, so the competition for a starting place has not gone away.
What has changed is the manager’s public position: he says he owes Mainoo game time, and he has chosen this camp to start paying it back.
