Kevin Danso is set to miss Sunderland’s home match against Leeds United after his dismissal at Bournemouth added a suspension problem to their worsening Premier League form.
The defender received a straight red in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium, leaving Régis Le Bris facing another defensive reshuffle.
Sunderland are 19th on four points and have not won a league game since beating Fulham on 30 August.
Kevin Danso red card: how long is his suspension?
Danso faces a one-match domestic ban for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, with the Sunderland Echo reporting that he will miss Leeds’ visit on Sunday 25 October.
The suspension does not extend to European competition. He remains eligible for Thursday’s Europa League match against Lech Poznan.
Why was Danso sent off?
Referee Craig Pawson dismissed Danso in the 17th minute after he pulled down Evanilson outside the penalty area.
The Bournemouth striker had taken possession and was through on goal. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed that VAR checked and upheld the decision for denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Sunderland were already trailing to Marcus Tavernier’s sixth-minute opener. Evanilson added the second in the 48th minute, securing Marco Rose’s first Premier League victory as Bournemouth manager and lifting his side out of the bottom three.
Who could replace Danso against Leeds?
Luke O’Nien is an option, while Nordi Mukiele could move into central defence.
Dan Ballard’s hamstring injury further restricts Le Bris’s choices, with the Sunderland Echo reporting that he is not expected back before late November.
Four successive league defeats have left Sunderland needing an immediate response. They must now prepare for their next domestic test without Danso.
