Kalyn Ponga has been named in New Zealand’s Rugby League World Cup squad, with Jahrome Hughes returning to international duty after injury.

Newcastle Knights full-back Ponga is among four potential debutants in Stacey Jones’ 23-man group following his decision to represent the Kiwis earlier this year.

His club team-mate Dane Gagai also earns selection after the International Rugby League approved his switch from Australia.

Warriors pair Jacob Laban and Tanner Stowers-Smith complete the uncapped contingent, while James Fisher-Harris continues as captain.

Hughes last played for New Zealand in their 2023 Pacific Championships final victory over Australia.

His return gives Jones another experienced option for a campaign that begins against the Kangaroos.

“We’re very excited for this World Cup campaign,” Jones said in New Zealand Rugby League’s squad announcement.

New Zealand face Australia at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on 15 October, before playing the Cook Islands in Christchurch on 25 October and Fiji on the Gold Coast on 31 October.

England have also named their World Cup squad, selecting five uncapped players under Brian McDermott.
