Yalcouye header lifts Brighton past Getafe into fifth
Malick Yalcouye's 64th-minute header gave Brighton a 1-0 win at Getafe on Thursday 5 November 2026 and moved them into fifth in the Conference League table.
Brighton and Hove Albion beat Getafe 1-0 at Estadio Coliseum on Thursday 5 November 2026, with midfielder Malick Yalcouye heading the 64th-minute winner in the UEFA Conference League. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler’s side moved into the top eight as a result.
The getafe vs brighton result, the first meeting between the two clubs, lifts Brighton into fifth in the 36-team league phase table with three games left. Yalcouye’s goal means they are unbeaten in their three matches so far, according to Sky Sports.
The win ends a short wait for a European victory. Brighton had drawn 0-0 at Jablonec in their previous Conference League match on 22 October.
Malick Yalcouye heads Brighton’s winner after Costinha’s cushioned header
Yalcouye, the Ivory Coast midfielder, was one of five changes Hurzeler made from the 1-0 win at Manchester City. He broke the deadlock in the 64th minute from close range.
Costinha cushioned his header back across the face of goal, and Yalcouye nodded the ball into the net. It was the only goal of the match.
Jaouen Hadjam hits woodwork twice in Getafe vs Brighton
Left-back Jaouen Hadjam struck the post and the crossbar before Yalcouye scored. His first effort came in the 38th minute, when he went through on goal and squeezed the ball under Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.
His second came in the 52nd minute, when he had time and space in the box and curled a shot onto the top of the bar. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen also made a save in the 31st minute to deny Ivan Azon at the near post.
| Minute | Moment |
|---|---|
| 31 | Verbruggen saves Azon’s near-post shot |
| 38 | Hadjam hits the post after beating Soria |
| 52 | Hadjam’s curled shot hits the top of the crossbar |
| 64 | Yalcouye heads in from close range |
| 79 | Substitute Ibrahim Osman skews wide from close range |
Osman’s miss in the 79th minute would have doubled the lead. It did not cost Brighton, who kept a clean sheet after Yalcouye’s goal.
Fabian Hurzeler on Brighton’s win and Conference League football
Hurzeler said the match followed the pattern he had expected from a Conference League tie. “It was what we expected. The games in the Conference League are different; you have to beat the low block and you have to be patient,” he told TNT Sports, in comments carried by Sky Sports.
The Brighton head coach was open about the standard of the performance after Yalcouye’s winner. “We didn’t play our best game; we had moments where we were lazy. But we kept a clean sheet and scored a goal. We deserved to win this game,” he said.
He also praised his players. “My players did it today, not at the highest level, but we had to win it,” Hurzeler said.
