EFL Roundup: Stockport Go Top as Salford Pull Clear

Stockport and Huddersfield overtook Bradford in League One, while Salford capitalised on defeats for their closest challengers and Terry Devlin rescued Portsmouth at Molineux.

Stockport County moved top of League One with a fourth successive league victory, while Salford City opened a four-point lead in League Two on a busy Tuesday night across the EFL.

Huddersfield joined Stockport on 22 points after beating Peterborough 4–1, with Bradford slipping to third following a goalless draw at Burton.

In the Championship, Terry Devlin’s late equaliser earned Portsmouth a 1–1 draw at Wolves, denying the hosts a place in the top six.

Championship: Devlin denies Wolves

Wolves were four minutes from victory when Devlin struck to secure a point for Portsmouth at Molineux.

Jordan James had put the hosts ahead in the 62nd minute, but Devlin’s late response left Wolves seventh on 18 points, one behind sixth-placed Stoke.

A win would have taken Wolves above both Stoke and West Brom. Instead, Portsmouth left with a draw that puts them 13th on 15 points.

League One: Stockport take over as Huddersfield hit four

Mamadou Jobe and Kyle Wootton scored six minutes apart after half-time as Stockport won 2–0 at Doncaster.

Jobe broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute following a corner. Wootton then followed in after Tommy Simkin saved Oliver Norwood’s penalty to give County a cushion they retained.

Huddersfield kept pace with an emphatic home victory over Peterborough, although the decisive spell came after the interval.

Ilias Bronkhorst’s early opener separated the sides until Joe Taylor doubled the lead in the 66th minute. Harry Leonard quickly pulled one back, but Taylor scored again before Bali Mumba completed the 4–1 win.

The results pushed Bradford out of the automatic promotion places after their 0–0 draw at Burton. Stockport and Huddersfield have 22 points, one more than the Bantams.

Below them, Cambridge drew 2–2 with Wycombe, while Plymouth lost 3–0 at Stevenage and Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 2–0 at Notts County.

Those results offered Oxford an opportunity to close the gap. Their 2–1 victory over Wigan leaves them seventh, level on points with Wednesday in sixth and with a game in hand.

Leicester were the division’s biggest away winners, beating Bromley 4–0. Mansfield also won comfortably on their travels, scoring three without reply at AFC Wimbledon.

Blackpool beat MK Dons 2–0, while Luton edged Barnsley 2–1.

League Two: Salford pull clear as Barnet and Crewe lose

Salford’s 2–1 victory at Bristol Rovers became more valuable as results elsewhere went their way.

Second-placed Barnet lost 3–1 at home to Swindon, while third-placed Crewe were beaten 2–0 at Exeter. Salford now have 25 points, four more than both clubs.

There is a qualification to that advantage: Barnet have played two fewer matches. Salford have created breathing space, but their closest challengers still have an opportunity to reduce it.

Walsall strengthened their position in fourth with a 3–0 win over Oldham, moving to 19 points. Cheltenham are fifth after beating Fleetwood 4–2.

Tranmere won 1–0 at Northampton, leaving the hosts in the bottom two. Crawley remain bottom after a 3–2 home defeat by Shrewsbury.

Rotherham drew 2–2 with Newport, while Rochdale and Grimsby shared the same scoreline. Chesterfield against Colchester, York against Accrington and Gillingham against Port Vale all finished 1–1.
