Donyell Malen: How Gian Piero Gasperini unlocked former Villa forward

Standfirst: key numbers behind Donyell Malen’s resurgence

  • Donyell Malen has scored 20 league goals in Europe’s top five divisions since his Roma debut on 18 January, more than Harry Kane (16) and Lamine Yamal (15).
  • At Aston Villa he scored 10 goals in 46 appearances while playing as a central striker for only 52% of his league minutes; under Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma that figure is 99%.
  • His scoring rate has jumped from one goal every 149.8 minutes at Villa to one every 96.7 minutes at Roma, where he has 21 goals and 3 assists in 25 games across all competitions.

Twenty league goals in eight months is the number that now defines Donyell Malen’s career. That return already places him ahead of Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal across Europe’s top five leagues. A level of output he never reached during two and a half seasons at Villa Park.

The gap between the two spells is not about effort or confidence. It comes down to where Malen has actually been asked to play.

Donyell Malen at Roma: how the tactical shift happened

At Villa, Malen was a squad forward asked to cover multiple roles. He spent just 52% of his league minutes as a central striker. The rest split across wide and rotational positions under successive managers. In 46 appearances he scored 10 goals. Added 2 assists, a return of one goal every 149.8 minutes.

Gasperini has removed that ambiguity entirely. Since Malen’s Roma debut on 18 January, he has played centrally for 99% of his Serie A minutes, given a fixed role at the tip of Roma’s attack rather than shuffled between flanks and the middle.

The numbers since have moved sharply. Malen has scored 21 goals and provided 3 assists in 25 matches across all competitions for Roma. That’s a scoring rate of one goal every 96.7 minutes. He also leads Europe’s top five leagues for combined goals and assists since his debut, with 22 goal involvements in total.

That output extends into Europe. Roma drew 1-1 with Fenerbahce in the Champions League. Malen supplied the assist for their goal, further evidence that his influence is not confined to Serie A alone.

The expert angle: super clinical at the heart of Roma’s attack

Speaking to BBC Sport, analyst Julien Laurens summed up the scale of the turnaround: “He has been incredible since January.” It is a verdict built on data rather than reputation, given Malen’s rate of returns since his move.

Laurens went further on what has changed inside Gasperini’s system, describing a player who has become the focal point of Roma’s play rather than one option among several. “He has been really efficient. Super clinical. Malen is at the heart of everything they do with the ball,” he said.

That framing matters. Malen’s numbers are not the product of a system generating chances for anyone in the front line. They stem from a specific, repeated role that suits his movement in the box. BBC Sport’s analysis of Malen’s Serie A form sets his numbers against the rest of the continent’s forwards. The gap to Kane and Yamal is not marginal.

Independent comparative goalscoring data across Europe confirms the same picture. Since his debut, only two players elsewhere in the top five leagues have logged more goal involvements than Malen’s 22. Positional certainty, not a change in ability, is the variable that has moved.

What happens next for Malen and Roma’s Champions League push

Roma’s Fenerbahce draw leaves their Champions League campaign delicately placed. Malen’s directness in behind defences central to how Gasperini wants to press for a win in their next continental fixture. Every additional goal involvement strengthens his case to keep the central role rather than rotate back to the flank.

Domestically, Serie A’s title picture gives Roma every incentive to keep the same structure running. Malen’s 21 goals in 25 matches across all competitions is already a career-best return at this stage of a season. Gasperini has shown no sign of altering a system delivering these numbers.

He is not the only player at a Serie A club rebuilding a Premier League reputation this way. Scott McTominay has scored 22 league goals since joining Napoli in August 2024. Only five players outscored him in that period. Rasmus Hojlund has racked up 19 goal involvements since his Napoli debut, behind only Federico Dimarco, Lautaro Martinez and Malen himself.

For Villa supporters, the lesson sits in the minutes breakdown rather than in hindsight. A forward used centrally little more than half the time became, once given a fixed central role elsewhere, the most productive attacker in Europe’s top five leagues. Roma’s task now is simply to keep building around him.
