Buatsi vs Hutchinson 2 weigh-in: Buatsi makes weight at second attempt

Buatsi was an ounce (28 grammes) over the light-heavyweight limit when he first stepped on the scales at Friday morning’s official weigh-in. He made the championship weight of 12st 7lb (79kg) at the second attempt after removing his clothes, according to BBC Sport.

A ceremonial weigh-in followed at Manchester’s Freight Island in front of around 100 members of the public. Hutchinson was first on the scales and was greeted by loud cheers from his supporters. Buatsi cupped his ears and encouraged the jeers.

“He’s talking like we haven’t done it before but we have. I’m excited about the crowd – I’ll see you all there,” Buatsi said. Hutchinson made a reference to Buatsi’s earlier weight problem when the two came face to face, according to BBC Sport. He also told the crowd he would show them what Buatsi is “made of tomorrow – 100%”.

What is at stake for Buatsi and Hutchinson

The rematch was first scheduled for the interim WBC title. It became a full world-title fight when David Benavidez vacated the belt to stay at cruiserweight, as Fight Freaks Unite reports. Buatsi, 33, has 20 wins and one defeat as a professional. Hutchinson, 28, has 20 wins and two defeats.

Buatsi won the first fight on a split decision at Wembley Stadium in September 2024, on the Daniel Dubois vs Anthony Joshua undercard, to take the vacant WBO interim title. He scored knockdowns in the sixth and ninth rounds. Since then Buatsi has lost to Callum Smith and beaten Zach Parker narrowly, while Hutchinson has won twice, according to The Independent.

Hutchinson told The Herald: “I believe it’s my destiny to become WBC champion of the world.” He would be the first Scot to hold a world title since Josh Taylor gave up his belts in 2023.
