  • The Bruno Fernandes injury concern is real: he has played all seven Manchester United matches this season for 558 minutes, the highest total in Michael Carrick’s squad.
  • Portugal manager Jorge Jesus says Fernandes has carried pain for around three games, affecting his display against Wales and forcing his omission against Norway.
  • Carrick admits having only five substitutes against Sabah FK left him no option but to leave Fernandes on for the full 90 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes workload: how the physical strain mounted

Bruno Fernandes has featured in every one of United’s seven matches this season, racking up 558 minutes, more than any other player at Michael Carrick’s disposal.

That workload has produced a genuine Bruno Fernandes injury concern, and it followed him onto international duty with Portugal.

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus confirmed the problem after leaving his captain out against Norway. “He said he’s been dealing with that pain for about three games, and that was one of the factors that prevented him from being at his usual level against Wales,” said Jesus, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

United sources cited by the same outlet say Fernandes fought hard just to be fit for the Premier League fixtures against Manchester City and Fulham.

He then returned to Old Trafford for the Champions League visit of Sabah, and was seen limping away from the stadium once the final whistle had gone.

Limited substitutes forced Carrick into high-risk decision

Carrick could have withdrawn Fernandes against Sabah.

Instead he used all five of his permitted substitutes elsewhere and left his captain to complete the full 90 minutes.

“We only had five subs. We had to make certain decisions on what that looked like,” Carrick said afterwards.

It is a blunt explanation, and it points to a squad already stretched too thin to protect its most important player.

Carrick did not dodge the wider question either. “But yeah, of course, he’s like anybody else. He has played an awful lot, but I think we’re developing the group and the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways. Tonight was just one of those things, there was decisions to be made and he ended up staying on,” he added.

That admission matters. Carrick is effectively saying the squad cannot yet cope without leaning on Fernandes, even when the numbers on the bench say otherwise. That pattern was already flagged in our full report on the Fernandes injury warning, filed before the Sabah FK game itself.

What happens next for Carrick’s depleted squad

Fernandes now returns to a treatment room that is filling up fast.

Patrick Dorgu picked up a hamstring injury on international duty, joining Matthijs de Ligt, Luke Shaw, Carlos Baleba, Mason Mount, Amad and Benjamin Sesko on the sidelines.

That leaves Carrick with a thin group of fit outfield players and a captain who is himself managing pain. No club has confirmed a return date for any of the injured players, and guessing at one would be premature.

What is clear is the pattern behind the numbers. Fernandes played 558 minutes in seven matches, more than a full match per week on average, and did so while carrying an injury Portugal’s own manager has confirmed. Carrick’s substitute problem will not fix itself, and until United’s injury list shortens, the strain on Fernandes’ body is unlikely to ease.
