Avan Lee named Munster interim CEO and targets permanent role

Munster have appointed Avan Lee as interim chief executive, with the former Hurricanes boss already setting his sights on securing the role permanently.

The New Zealander will start towards the end of October, replacing Ian Flanagan, who is stepping down after seven years in charge.

Lee’s initial appointment is for 12 months, but he has made clear he intends to build a longer-term future with the province.

“But I’m not coming over to look at a 12-month job,” he said, as reported by The Irish Times.

Who is Avan Lee?

Lee spent a decade as chief executive of the Hurricanes between 2015 and 2025. The Wellington side won their first Super Rugby title during his tenure in 2016.

He also brings experience of Irish rugby. Lee previously lived in Ireland, played for Clontarf and worked in Dublin as World Rugby’s general manager of sevens.

His appointment follows Flanagan’s announcement last Thursday that he would leave at the end of this month.

When does Lee start at Munster?

Lee is due to arrive in Ireland on 21 October before taking up his duties later in the month.

Munster and the IRFU confirmed the appointment on Wednesday, with provincial chair Ger Malone praising his experience and performance during the interview process.

Lee will work with the board, IRFU, players and staff across the organisation. While he hopes to remain beyond the initial term, his appointment is currently an interim one.
