Tom Christie explains decision to stay
Christie said he and his fiancée Sophie had settled into life in the North East, with the city and Newcastle’s supporters playing a part in his decision.
“We’re at the start of a really exciting journey here,” he told the club. “There’s no limit as to what can be achieved at this club.”
He added: “It’s a tremendous city and the fans make it a special place to be, so it was an absolute no-brainer in terms of wanting to extend our stay.”
McFarland praises captain’s influence
McFarland highlighted Christie’s effect on the squad as well as his contribution during matches.
“Tom’s leadership and professionalism are having a huge influence on our other players, and it’s fantastic to get this extension locked in,” the Newcastle head coach said.
He praised the flanker’s defensive work and ability at the breakdown, while identifying an attacking contribution alongside those established strengths.
“His ability in defence and at the breakdown is well known throughout the sport, and in addition to that he is bringing a real attacking edge to his game.”
McFarland said retaining a core of players was particularly valuable during a period of change at Newcastle, describing Christie as someone who could remain a figurehead for years to come.
From Crusaders and Canterbury to Newcastle
Newcastle announced Christie’s original signing in August 2025, with the move scheduled for that autumn.
The New Zealander arrived with three Super Rugby titles and previous leadership experience as a New Zealand Under-20 captain.
Before moving to England, he captained Canterbury to the 2025 National Provincial Championship title. Canterbury’s account of the final described the victory over Otago as a farewell for Christie before his Newcastle move.
Canterbury recovered from a half-time deficit to secure their first NPC title since 2017, giving him a trophy-winning finish to that spell in New Zealand.
Canterbury also won this year’s NPC final, beating a Northland side featuring James Ramm, who has now earned an Australia call-up.
Extension follows Newcastle’s win over Sale
The announcement comes after Christie captained Newcastle to a 17-3 victory over Sale Sharks at Kingston Park on Friday.
Newcastle trailed 3-0 at half-time before tries from Christian Wade and George McGuigan helped turn the match around. Josh Hodge added both conversions and a penalty.
Wade’s score also brought an individual milestone, drawing him level with Chris Ashton on 101 Premiership tries. Read our report on Wade equalling the Premiership try record.
