Tonga World Cup squad

Tyson Frizell has been named in the Tonga World Cup squad ahead of their opening match against England in Perth on 17 October.

The Newcastle Knights forward could represent a third country at the tournament, having played for Wales in 2013 and Australia in their victorious 2017 campaign.

Frizell, whose father is Welsh and mother is Tongan, previously represented Tonga on their 2023 tour of England.

Tonga World Cup squad includes experienced forwards

Jason Taumalolo, Addin Fonua-Blake and Haumole Olakau’atu are among the forwards selected alongside Frizell in the 24-man group.

Halfback Isaiya Katoa is also included, with Robert Toia, Tolutau Koula and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak among the backline options.

According to NRL.com, Frizell expects to be fit despite suffering a rib injury during Newcastle’s preliminary-final win over Penrith.

He subsequently played in Sunday’s grand final defeat by Sydney Roosters.

Daniel Tupou misses out through injury, while Isaiah Iongi is still recovering from syndesmosis surgery.

England face Tonga first in Perth

Brian McDermott’s England begin their campaign against Tonga at HBF Park before facing France at the same venue on 24 October.

Their third match is against Papua New Guinea in Wollongong on 30 October.

England’s 23-player World Cup squad includes five uncapped players, with George Williams named captain.

The Tonga selection gives McDermott a clearer picture of the opposition for his side’s first tournament assignment.
