Richard Kone’s 15-minute QPR hat-trick explained: the record he set and why Mané’s mark still stands

Richard Kone completed his hat-trick in the 15th minute of QPR’s 5–0 win over Swansea City on Saturday, recording the earliest treble from kick-off across England’s top four divisions in Opta’s records dating from 2004/05.
The distinction matters. Kone had three goals before the opening quarter of an hour was over, but that measures how early he completed his hat-trick in the match. It does not measure the time between his first and third goals.
That is why his achievement can sit alongside Sadio Mané’s Premier League record of three goals in two minutes and 56 seconds.
What record did Richard Kone set?
The EFL’s post-match stat pack, supplied by Opta, identifies Kone’s treble as the earliest from the start of a match across England’s top four tiers within its recorded period.
There are two qualifications to keep attached to that claim: the clock starts at kick-off, and the data cited begins in 2004/05.
It therefore supports calling this the earliest completed hat-trick in that dataset. It does not establish an unrestricted all-time record across English football.
How Kone scored his three goals
Kone struck in the second, ninth and 15th minutes, finishing his treble from the penalty spot.
According to Sky Sports’ match report, Paul Smyth supplied the opening goal with a ball across from the right. Kone then headed in Kwame Poku’s cross before converting his penalty after Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux brought down Smyth.
The listed goal minutes put roughly 13 minutes between Kone’s first and third goals. They do not provide an exact interval in minutes and seconds.
Jimmy Dunne added two more as QPR completed a five-goal victory at Loftus Road. The result features in our Saturday EFL roundup, alongside Southampton’s win at West Ham and Lincoln’s defeat of Burnley.
Why Sadio Mané’s record still stands
Mané’s benchmark answers a different question: how quickly did a player score three goals once the first had gone in?
The Premier League’s official records list his two minutes and 56 seconds for Southampton against Aston Villa on 16 May 2015 as the competition’s fastest hat-trick.
Kone completed his treble earlier in the match, but Mané scored his three goals in a much shorter burst.
There is also a competition distinction. Kone’s goals came in the Championship; Mané’s record belongs to the Premier League.
What the afternoon means for QPR
Beyond the record, this was Kone’s first scoring contribution of the league season. Three goals in one afternoon gave QPR a decisive return from a striker who had been struggling for fitness and form.
The supply was significant too: Smyth created the opener and won the penalty, while Poku delivered the cross for the second. Kone finished the chances, but QPR repeatedly found ways to serve him inside the penalty area.
One performance cannot establish that those early-season difficulties are behind him. It did, however, turn an individual wait for a goal into the decisive contribution to a convincing Championship victory.
