Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge as a Mike Penders own goal, Cole Palmer’s dismissal and a superb Mathys Tel finish settled the London derby.

Penders inadvertently punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute before Palmer received a second yellow card for a challenge on Conor Gallagher. Tel then scored in the 87th minute to secure Tottenham’s first victory at Chelsea since 2018.

It was a damaging finish for Xabi Alonso’s side after a goalless first half, while Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham followed their victory over Coventry with another three points.

Kinský keeps Chelsea out before the break

Chelsea were without João Pedro, with Morgan Rogers leading the attack and Geovany Quenda joining Pedro Neto and Palmer behind him.

The hosts created opportunities before half-time, but Antonín Kinský made important saves, including one to deny Jordan Henderson after a flowing move.

Tottenham also had chances, with Omar Marmoush unable to convert a close-range opportunity. The visitors increasingly threatened down their left, where Tel tested Josh Acheampong.

As We Ain’t Got No History’s report describes, Chelsea’s early pressing produced openings, but they could not turn those moments into a lead.

Penders own goal breaks the deadlock

Penders was making his first Premier League start, having replaced the injured Emiliano Martínez during Chelsea’s previous league match at Everton.

His decisive mistake came when Mateus Fernandes delivered a corner from the left. Under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, the goalkeeper attempted to punch clear but sent the ball backwards into his own goal.

The Times’ live report records the error that finally separated the teams after more than an hour without a breakthrough.

Chelsea had little time to respond before their task became harder.

Palmer dismissal leaves Chelsea chasing with ten men

Palmer had already been booked following an altercation with Fernandes when he challenged Gallagher and received his second yellow card.

The dismissal left Chelsea a goal down and a player short in the closing stages. Whatever chances remained of recovering a point disappeared when Tel added Tottenham’s second.

The forward carried the ball from his own half, advanced past Chelsea’s defenders and finished low beyond Penders. It was the clearest demonstration of the threat he had posed throughout the evening and an emphatic way to settle the contest.

Maddison injury concern tempers Tottenham’s victory

Tottenham’s win came with concern over James Maddison, who was forced off early in the second half.

According to talkSPORT’s injury report, he later returned to the bench to celebrate with his team-mates. The nature and severity of the problem were not confirmed in the immediate reports.

For Chelsea, the decisive sequence was concentrated into ten minutes: the own goal, Palmer’s dismissal and Tel’s finish. A match that remained level deep into the second half ended with Tottenham celebrating a rare Stamford Bridge victory.

Our Chelsea–Tottenham preview covers the build-up, alongside the pre-match assessments from Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi.
