Twelve months on from lifting the trophy, Luke Littler will not be anywhere near it. The Australian Darts Masters 2026 lands in Wollongong on 21-22 August with the reigning World Champion and world No.1 absent, having ring-fenced August as a break from a schedule that has otherwise swallowed him whole. The PDC’s Oceanic swing goes ahead without its defending champion, and the World Series title is suddenly anyone’s.
That matters more than a non-ranking weekend usually would. This is the last competitive television darts before the World Series of Darts Finals on 17-20 September, and the final chance to build rhythm before the World Grand Prix opens the autumn ranking majors on 28 September. For eight PDC representatives who have spent 2026 staring at the back of Littler’s shirt, Wollongong is a rare clear run.
Who fills the gap Littler leaves
The obvious beneficiary is Gian van Veen. The Dutchman sits second on the PDC Order of Merit behind Littler, reached the World Championship final in January, and secured his Wollongong slot alongside Ross Smith for what will be his first World Series appearance Down Under. Van Veen’s 2026 has been the breakout story nobody outside the Netherlands saw coming; a maiden World Series title would round it off nicely.
James Wade brings the other kind of edge. The Machine’s return to the Australian field gives the draw a major winner with two decades of stage scar tissue, and a player who took Littler to 11-7 in the UK Open final earlier this year. On a bill without the world No.1, experience carries a premium.
The local contingent that earned its Australian Darts Masters 2026 places
The other half of the field came the hard way. Australian Darts Association ranking events supplied most of the home berths across a punishing qualifying run: Tim Pusey booked his place with an Event 16 win, Joe Comito converted a breakthrough season into a first Masters appearance, and Adam Leek, Brody Klinge, Darren Penhall and Raymond Smith all confirmed slots as the PDC locked the Oceanic places down. The DPNZ Christchurch qualifier closed off the last of the trans-Tasman route.
History says the locals get chewed up in round one. History also says one of them does not – the World Series format hands every qualifier a first-round tie against a PDC name, and Wollongong crowds have watched enough ambushes to arrive hopeful rather than resigned.
What Wollongong actually feeds into
Nothing here touches the Order of Merit. What it does touch is the World Series Order of Merit that shapes the field and the seedings for next month’s Finals, and the harder-to-quantify business of being sharp when the ranking majors restart. Littler’s bid for a 2026 clean sweep resumes at the World Grand Prix, where the double-start format has historically been the most awkward of the lot for front-runners.
Which is the quiet subplot of the weekend. Two days in Wollongong will not decide a season, but whoever walks out of it with momentum gets a month to sit on it before the World Grand Prix. Littler chose rest over reps. Everyone else in the draw has been handed the alternative, and by the end of the year we will know which was the better call. Full schedule and draw details are published via the PDC.
