Reece James was absent from the opening stages of Chelsea training on Tuesday as the captain continues to be assessed following a knee injury.

Sky Sports reporter James Savundra reported that the England international did not take part in the first 15 minutes, which were open to the media.

The update leaves uncertainty over his availability for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Everton. His absence from the open session does not, however, confirm that he has been ruled out of that match.

Chelsea assessing James week by week

James missed Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth after experiencing discomfort during training on Friday.

Xabi Alonso subsequently confirmed the knee problem, having previously expected his captain to be available for selection.

As covered in Dave.Sport’s initial Reece James injury update, tests followed on Friday afternoon and Alonso said Chelsea would assess the situation week by week.

No firm return date was given. Tuesday’s training observation provides a further update on his involvement, but does not establish how long the setback will keep him out.

Caicedo return gives Alonso midfield options

Chelsea received more encouraging fitness news against Bournemouth, with Moisés Caicedo making his first start of the season after a calf injury.

The Ecuador international partnered Jordan Henderson in midfield, giving Alonso an experienced combination while James was unavailable.

Reuters reported that Alonso praised Caicedo’s influence after the victory. Henderson and João Pedro scored twice each, with Morgan Rogers also on target.

Attention now turns to whether James can rejoin preparations before the visit to Everton on 17 October.
