Diego Gomez scored a spectacular opener as Brighton beat 10-man Brentford 2-0 to climb above Manchester City into second in the Premier League.

Pascal Gross added a penalty before half-time at the Amex, with Brentford already a man down after Igor Thiago’s dismissal.

Fabian Hürzeler’s side followed their victory over City with another three points to strengthen their position near the top of the table.

Gomez puts Brighton in front

The breakthrough arrived after 15 minutes when Gomez struck a superb left-footed effort from distance into the top corner.

Brentford’s task became considerably harder midway through the first half. Thiago was initially booked following a clash with Chema Andres, but referee Michael Oliver changed the decision to a red card after a VAR review.

The striker’s arm had caught the Brighton midfielder in the face, leaving the visitors to play most of the match with 10 men.

Gross penalty compounds Brentford’s problems

Another avoidable incident brought Brighton their second goal. Keane Lewis-Potter pulled down Luka Vuskovic at a corner, giving Gross the chance to double the lead from the spot in the 42nd minute.

The midfielder converted, and Brentford reached the interval facing both a two-goal deficit and a numerical disadvantage.

Brighton continued to create chances after the break, with Caoimhin Kelleher preventing further damage. Brentford could not find a goal to put the result in doubt.
