Enzo Le Fée’s first-half penalty gave Sunderland a much-needed 1-0 victory over Chelsea as the Black Cats ended their wait for a Premier League win.

The midfielder converted in the 36th minute at the Stadium of Light after Levi Colwill was penalised for a challenge on Brian Brobbey. Sunderland held out to claim their first league victory since August and move off the bottom.

Le Fée gives Sunderland the advantage

Sunderland’s afternoon began with a setback when captain Granit Xhaka went off injured, with Jules Ahoka coming on in his place.

But the hosts recovered and Brobbey’s battle with Colwill produced the decisive moment. Referee Jarred Gillett awarded a penalty as the pair tangled inside the area, and Le Fée made no mistake from the spot.

Sky Sports’ footage of the goal shows the incident that ultimately separated the sides.

Chelsea fail to find an equaliser

Xabi Alonso introduced Estêvão for Colwill at half-time as Chelsea chased the game, but Sunderland remained a threat. Mike Penders denied substitute Wilson Isidor a second goal from close range.

Chelsea had late opportunities to rescue a point. Geovany Quenda sent an effort narrowly wide, while Danny Welbeck headed over in stoppage time.

Neither could find the finish Chelsea needed, leaving Sunderland to celebrate a valuable clean sheet and three points before the international break.
