Watford vs Middlesbrough gives the Championship leaders an immediate chance to respond to their defeat at Wrexham, but Saturday’s trip to Vicarage Road comes with an important fitness question over Will Lankshear.

Kick-off is at 3pm UK time on Saturday 7 November. Watford are seeking a third successive home victory after beating Lincoln City 1-0 on Tuesday, while Middlesbrough must recover from Wednesday’s 2-0 loss in north Wales.

Watford vs Middlesbrough preview: Recent form

Middlesbrough remain top of the Championship despite their setback at Wrexham. The defeat ended an 11-match unbeaten league run and was only their second loss of the campaign.

Kim Hellberg’s side had taken 13 points from their previous five matches, but the table remains tight enough that another dropped result could quickly change the picture.

Watford are 20th, although their home performances have been considerably stronger than their away results. Thirteen of their 14 points have come at Vicarage Road.

Alessio Dionisi’s side have beaten Charlton and Lincoln without conceding in their last two home games. Those results give them something to build on against a much higher-ranked opponent.

Watford team news: Kyprianou suspended

Hector Kyprianou serves a one-match suspension after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season against Lincoln. Martin Payero is an option to replace him in midfield.

Jeremy Ngakia, Kwadwo Baah, Soumaïla Coulibaly and Michail Antonio remain among the reported injury absentees.

Edoardo Bove is making progress, but a return to training should not be confused with immediate match availability. In Dionisi’s latest fitness update, the midfielder was still being prepared for a return after the international break.

Watford’s earlier official injury bulletin also outlined the rehabilitation work being undertaken by Baah, Ngakia and Coulibaly.

Middlesbrough injury news: Will Lankshear remains a doubt

Lankshear missed the Wrexham defeat with a muscle problem. Hellberg hopes the striker can return against Watford, but his availability has not been confirmed.

Hayters’ report of Hellberg’s update keeps the forward in the doubtful category rather than ruling him out.

David Strelec is not necessarily a straightforward replacement. Having recently returned from his own injury, the striker is still building fitness, and Hellberg has suggested that starting him could carry too much risk.

Alfie Jones and Rokas Pukštas remain unavailable. Boro’s final attacking selection therefore depends on both Lankshear’s assessment and how much involvement Strelec can safely manage.

Marc Bola urges Watford to take the initiative

Former Middlesbrough defender Marc Bola expects the visitors to respond strongly to their midweek defeat, but wants Watford to make home advantage count.

“We’re at home, so we can’t give them too much respect,” Bola told Watford’s official website.

He expects Boro to put the hosts under pressure and spend plenty of time on the ball. His message, though, was that Watford must carry the confidence from their Lincoln victory into this tougher assignment.

Where the match could be won

Analysis: Watford’s recent home clean sheets provide a useful foundation. They do not need to dominate possession to make this difficult for Middlesbrough, but they do need to retain an attacking threat when they recover the ball.

Kyprianou’s suspension complicates that balance. Whoever replaces him must help protect the defence while giving Watford a route out when Boro press.

For Middlesbrough, the challenge is to create chances consistently if Lankshear is unavailable again. Their response should involve more than changing the centre-forward: movement around the box and the quality of the final pass will matter against hosts who have recently defended well at home.

Watford vs Middlesbrough prediction

Our prediction: Watford 1-1 Middlesbrough.

Boro’s position makes them the stronger side over the season so far, but Watford’s home results deserve weight. With uncertainty over the visitors’ attacking options, a tight match and a share of the points look plausible.
