Dundee United can extend their unbeaten Premiership run to seven matches on Saturday, but standing in their way are the Motherwell side who inflicted their last league defeat.

Jim Goodwin’s team welcome the Steelmen to Tannadice for a 3pm GMT kick-off on Saturday 7 November. United arrive after drawing 2-2 at Celtic, while Motherwell are looking to build on their 1-0 victory over St Mirren.

The hosts are sixth with 16 points from 11 matches. Motherwell sit ninth on 12 points, having played a game more.

Dundee United vs Motherwell preview: unbeaten run faces a test

United have won three and drawn three of their past six Premiership games. According to BBC Sport’s statistical preview, only Rangers are on a longer unbeaten league run.

Taking a point at Celtic Park provided further evidence of their improvement. United have also beaten St Mirren, Hibernian and Aberdeen during their recent run, giving Goodwin reason to approach Saturday with confidence.

Motherwell have nevertheless proved awkward opponents. They have won six of the past eight league meetings between the clubs, including both encounters in 2026.

The most recent was a 3-0 victory at Fir Park in September. United have avoided defeat in the league since that result, making Saturday a useful measure of how far they have progressed.

Motherwell seek momentum after St Mirren victory

Alfred Johansson’s side earned a welcome win last weekend through Lukas Fadinger’s penalty. It was his fourth goal of the season, according to Motherwell’s official match preview.

That result followed a 2-2 draw at St Johnstone and gave Motherwell four points from two games. Their next task is to turn that improvement into a positive result away from home.

United’s recent consistency makes this a different challenge from September’s meeting. Motherwell can take encouragement from their head-to-head record, but they face a home side playing with greater confidence.

Dundee United team news: Merghem returns, Farrugia out

Mehdi Merghem returns after a knee injury, giving Goodwin another attacking option.

However, Neil Farrugia is ruled out with a groin strain. Will Ferry and Emmanuel Agyei also remain sidelined with knee injuries, according to Friday evening’s BBC Sport team news.

Merghem’s availability updates earlier previews that had still listed him as injured. His return does not confirm a starting place, with Goodwin yet to announce his team.

Motherwell team news: Hendry pushes for involvement

Motherwell remain without Alex Lowry, Dylan Williams and Johnny Koutroumbis. Lowry has a knee injury, Williams a hamstring problem and Koutroumbis a muscle injury.

Callum Hendry is back fit and looking to establish himself after an interrupted spell. In his pre-match interview with the club, the striker discussed his return and ambition to force his way into Johansson’s plans.

His availability provides another option, although Motherwell’s starting XI has not been confirmed.

What could decide Dundee United vs Motherwell?

Analysis: United’s strongest argument is their sustained improvement since September. They have shown they can win tight matches and compete away at Celtic, but must now reproduce that standard against a side with a strong recent record against them.

Farrugia’s absence removes one attacking option, although Merghem’s return helps. For Motherwell, building on the clean sheet against St Mirren would give them a platform to frustrate the hosts.
