Manchester United have contacted Didier Deschamps about a possible return to club management, according to a report in France, as Michael Carrick prepares for Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa.

Foot Mercato reports that contact took place in recent days, but says the former France coach is not in a hurry to take another job and has reservations about the Old Trafford role.

Deschamps contact reported, but no agreement announced

The report, by Santi Aouna and Aurélien Léger-Moëc, says Deschamps is prepared to wait until next summer for the right opportunity. It does not establish that he has accepted an offer or been chosen as United’s next manager.

Carrick remains in charge. The distinction matters after United’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League win over Roma ended a run of nine matches without victory.

Roma comeback shifts attention to Aston Villa

Bruno Fernandes began the recovery from the penalty spot before Matheus Cunha scored twice. That result gave Carrick an immediate lift, but Villa provide another demanding test at Old Trafford.

United also have a midfield decision after Carlos Baleba’s hamstring problem. Our latest United team-news report explains why Youri Tielemans could start against his former club.

United’s official match guide confirms Sunday’s 4.30pm GMT kick-off. Lisandro Martinez is suspended for the hosts, while Villa are without banned right-back Matty Cash.

What happens next?

For now, the managerial development is reported contact, not a confirmed appointment. Carrick’s next opportunity to strengthen his position comes on the pitch, with United needing to turn Tuesday’s comeback into a more sustained improvement.
