Michael Noonan: Forest agree deal for Shamrock Rovers striker

Nottingham Forest have agreed a pre-agreement for Michael Noonan, the 18-year-old Shamrock Rovers striker, with the move set for January 1. That is the date Noonan officially joins the academy, once his season in Dublin is done. The Michael Noonan Forest transfer caps a scouting race that several clubs were part of.

Few 18-year-olds arrive with a record like his. Noonan already holds two European age marks, and Forest’s academy staff see the deal as proof of a pathway they have spent years building.

Michael Noonan: how the deal was secured

Noonan began his senior career at St Patrick’s Athletic before Shamrock Rovers signed him in January 2025. The move paid off fast. In February 2025 he scored against Molde in the UEFA Conference League, becoming the youngest player ever to find the net in the competition’s history at 16 years and 197 days.

He has kept breaking records since. Noonan scored the winning goal in a European Championship qualifier to become the youngest player to score for the Republic of Ireland under-21s, a mark that put him on the radar of recruitment staff well beyond Dublin.

The initial announcement confirmed the pre-agreement, with Noonan due at the academy on January 1. It is the latest line in our dedicated Forest coverage, which has followed the club’s academy investment closely this year.

The expert angle: George Syrianos on the academy vision

George Syrianos, Forest’s Chief Football Officer, explained the thinking behind the deal in comments carried by reporting by the Nottingham Post. “Michael is a player we, along with a number of other clubs, have followed closely for some time, so we’re delighted he has chosen Nottingham Forest,” he said. “Recruiting high-potential young players is central to our long-term vision for the academy. We want the academy to be a genuine pathway to the first team, and that means bringing in the right talent early and giving them a clear, individual plan to get there.”

Syrianos also credited the staff behind that plan. “Michael’s decision reflects the work Chris (McGuane, head of academy), Andy (Reid, head of football development) and everyone involved has put into developing and then sharing what that pathway looks like here,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming Michael and his family to Forest and to supporting his development in the years ahead.”

That is less a one-off signing than a stated strategy for the club. Forest want the academy to produce first-team players, not simply stockpile promising names, and Noonan’s record gives that plan an early headline act.

What happens next for Noonan at Forest

Noonan is due at Forest’s academy on January 1, once his commitments with Shamrock Rovers for the season are complete. There is no fixture list or squad number attached yet; the pre-agreement covers the move itself, not the detail of his first months at the City Ground.

The next marker for the Michael Noonan Forest transfer will simply be his arrival. Syrianos has already named the academy staff, Chris McGuane and Andy Reid, who will shape the individual plan he described. For a player who broke two continental age records before turning 18, that plan will be watched closely by everyone who follows the club.
