Derby County John Eustace

John Eustace insists he will not walk away from Derby County after a 4–0 home defeat by Norwich City left his side with one Championship win from 14 matches.

The Rams conceded three times before half-time at Pride Park on Tuesday, suffering another heavy defeat just three days after losing 4–1 at Millwall.

Derby remain 23rd on seven points, with Friday’s home match against Bolton Wanderers offering their next opportunity to respond.

John Eustace accepts responsibility for Derby results

Eustace pointed to the absence of nine defenders but acknowledged that injuries and suspensions could not excuse the results.

“It is very frustrating at the moment but I’m not a quitter,” he said in his post-match comments reported by Sky Sports.

The Derby head coach accepted responsibility for the performances and said conceding four goals in successive matches was unacceptable. He maintained that the squad could produce more, despite the restrictions imposed by their injury problems.

The defeat was Derby’s fourth in five league games. They are still waiting for their first home Championship victory of the season.

Norwich take control before half-time

Anthony Musaba opened the scoring after eight minutes, reacting after Jacob Widell Zetterström saved Darlin Yongwa’s header. Paris Maghoma doubled the lead before Yongwa struck shortly before the interval.

According to Derby’s official match report, Eustace made three substitutions at half-time, introducing Lewis Travis, Mo Fuseini and Jack Robinson.

Carlton Morris subsequently forced Daniel Grimshaw into a save with a header, but Norwich substitute Jovon Makama ended any prospect of a recovery with a long-range fourth in the 66th minute.

For Philippe Clement’s visitors, it was a third successive league victory. Norwich are now 12th on 18 points.

Derby’s Championship position makes Bolton response urgent

The latest Championship table shows the scale of Derby’s difficulties: one win, four draws and nine defeats, with 29 goals conceded and 11 scored.

Only Preston North End sit below them. Derby are seven points behind 21st-placed Charlton Athletic, the first side outside the relegation places.

Friday brings another match at Pride Park and a chance to stop that gap growing. After conceding eight goals across two defeats, Eustace needs a response from a team whose defensive problems are becoming increasingly costly.
