Brian Brobbey has signed a new Sunderland contract until 2031, committing his future to the club after helping them qualify for Europe in their first season back in the Premier League.
The 24-year-old Netherlands striker has scored 10 goals in 40 appearances since arriving from Ajax in September 2025. Sunderland confirmed the agreement on Tuesday.
Brobbey said the confidence shown in him by the club had been important to his decision, while director of football Florent Ghisolfi believes there is more to come from the forward.
Brobbey explains Sunderland contract decision
Speaking in a club interview after signing, Brobbey credited his team-mates and coaching staff with helping him settle on Wearside.
“I grew as a new player, I met a lot of new people here that made me feel at home,” he said.
He admitted Sunderland’s progress last season had exceeded his expectations when he joined a newly promoted side. European qualification was among the moments he picked out, alongside his equaliser against Arsenal and the winner at Newcastle United.
Brobbey also described the supporters’ backing as a source of motivation and said he wanted to take Sunderland as far as possible during the years covered by his new deal.
Ghisolfi backs Brobbey to keep improving
In Sunderland’s announcement, Ghisolfi said the agreement reflected a shared belief in the club’s direction.
The director of football stressed that Sunderland must both support and challenge Brobbey to help him fulfil his potential. He described the striker as an important part of the club’s plans to develop a team together.
Manchester City hat-trick the highlight of Brobbey’s season
Brobbey’s three goals this season all came in September’s 5-3 defeat at Manchester City. He became the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
Seven goals in the previous campaign had helped Sunderland secure European football. Their Europa League start this season has brought two wins and a draw from three matches.
The contract announcement gives Sunderland certainty over an important member of their attack as they balance domestic and European commitments. For Brobbey, the next task is to turn the faith shown in him into more goals.
