Michael Carrick expects to remain in charge for Manchester United’s next match after their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea extended the club’s winless run to nine games.

Asked by TNT Sports whether he thought he would oversee United’s next fixture, Carrick replied: “Yes.”

Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored after half-time at Stamford Bridge, where Lisandro Martínez was sent off as United suffered another setback. Carrick’s side have seven points from nine Premier League matches.

United return to Old Trafford on Tuesday to face Roma in the Champions League. Carrick’s reply reflected his own expectation, not a club statement.

Michael Carrick reaction: United lost their way after half-time

Carrick felt United had been well placed at the interval but failed to carry their first-half performance into the second period.

“We didn’t come out, and didn’t get going in the second half,” he told TNT Sports, in an interview reported by BBC Sport via AOL.

The United manager believed his team should have led at half-time. Instead, Chelsea took control after the restart, with Rogers opening the scoring after 50 minutes before Palmer doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 64th, according to Chelsea’s official match report.

Carrick acknowledged that United had not won enough matches: “There is no hiding from the fact that we haven’t won enough games.” He said they needed to build on the parts of their first-half display that had worked.

Carrick declines to blame Lisandro Martínez after red card

Martínez’s dismissal compounded United’s difficulties, leaving them to finish the match with 10 men. He received a second yellow card after 63 minutes for elbowing Wesley Fofana at a corner, following a VAR review. Palmer converted the resulting penalty a minute later.

Asked whether he felt let down by the defender, Carrick answered: “No.” He said he had not seen the incident when he spoke after the match.

Manchester United winless run reaches nine matches

United’s latest defeat follows losses against Como and Bournemouth. Across those three matches, they have conceded nine goals and scored once, having lost 4-1 at Como in the Champions League and 3-0 against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

United are winless in nine games in all competitions, with three draws and six defeats. That matches their run in October and November 1988, as identified in Chelsea’s official pre-match statistics. Their last longer sequence was 10 matches in 1984.

Saturday’s result also leaves United searching for their first Premier League clean sheet of the season. They arrived at Stamford Bridge with seven points from eight matches and left with that total unchanged. They have also failed to score in four of their nine Premier League games this season.

The contrast with the end of last season is stark. Starting with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on 18 April, United finished their league campaign with five wins and a draw to secure third place and Champions League qualification.
