Roméo Lavia and Morgan Rogers produced the decisive move as Chelsea beat Manchester United 2–0 at Stamford Bridge, while Lisandro Martínez’s dismissal left the visitors with little prospect of a recovery.

United created enough chances to make the first half uncomfortable for Chelsea, but Rogers broke the deadlock after the interval before Cole Palmer doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Estêvão also impressed for the hosts, while Amad threatened without finding the finish United needed. Read our Chelsea vs Man Utd match report for the full story.

Chelsea player ratings

Mike Penders — 7

Helped Chelsea survive their vulnerable first-half spells, denying Amad when United found space behind the defence. His late touch onto the crossbar from Mbeumo’s powerful strike ensured the afternoon ended with a clean sheet.

Josh Acheampong — 7

Recovered from an uncertain start and made an important intervention to block Fernandes. Grew into the contest as Chelsea established control, offering a more assured presence after the interval.

Wesley Fofana — 5

Amad caused him significant problems, particularly when United broke into space. Needed both recovery defending and help from Penders to escape punishment. Won the penalty when Martínez challenged him at a corner, but that should not obscure the earlier difficulties.

Levi Colwill — 6

Part of a defence that allowed United too many opportunities before the break, although he avoided the most conspicuous mistakes. Had a more manageable afternoon once Chelsea went ahead and the visitors lost a player.

Marco Palestra — 5

A difficult first Premier League start. Showed a willingness to recover his position, but Chelsea struggled to establish defensive control during the opening half. There is more to develop in his understanding with those around him.

Moisés Caicedo — 6

Competed throughout a busy midfield contest but could not consistently prevent United from advancing in the first half. More effective once Chelsea gained the lead and could dictate the pace of possession.

Roméo Lavia — 8

The opening goal began with his ability to win possession and immediately do something constructive with it. Escaped the pressure in midfield and released Rogers before United could reorganise. His composure helped Chelsea turn a difficult game in their favour.

Estêvão — 8

Gave Chelsea a persistent threat on the right, taking on defenders and looking to combine around the penalty area. Twice found the net only to be denied by offside decisions. Some choices needed refining, but his attacking ambition was valuable.

Cole Palmer — 7

Not his cleanest performance, with chances missed and a penalty that Lammens nearly stopped. Nevertheless, converted the opportunity that put Chelsea firmly in charge and became increasingly involved as United’s defensive shape deteriorated.

Morgan Rogers — 8

Transformed his afternoon with the opening goal. Accelerated into the space ahead of him and finished calmly over Lammens. Continued to unsettle United with his running, drawing the foul that brought Martínez his first booking.

Pedro Neto — 6

His movement created opportunities, but the end product did not match the approach work. Failed to hit the target from a promising first-half position and later had a header saved. Useful without being decisive.

Chelsea substitutes

Pep Chavarría — 6: Entered with Chelsea two goals ahead and helped them complete the job without a late defensive setback.

Malo Gusto, Valentín Barco, Danny Welbeck and Geovany Quenda — not rated: Late introductions with insufficient time for a fair assessment.

Manchester United player ratings

Senne Lammens — 6

Made saves that prevented the score becoming more uncomfortable, but will be disappointed not to have stopped Palmer’s penalty after getting a strong hand to it. Rogers’ finish gave him a much harder problem.

Leny Yoro — 6

His recovery speed was useful against Chelsea’s mobile attack. Could not always prevent the hosts finding space, however, and United’s defensive organisation became increasingly stretched after half-time.

Harry Maguire — 5

Contributed to the first-half set-piece chance that Cunha headed in from an offside position. The more significant moment came at the other end, where Rogers accelerated beyond him to open the scoring. A later intervention denied Palmer a close-range opportunity.

Lisandro Martínez — 3

Two bookings in quick succession left United a man down and facing a penalty. The challenge on Fofana was especially damaging because there was no need to make it. A loss of discipline at precisely the moment his side needed composure.

Diogo Dalot — 5

Had a demanding assignment against Estêvão and struggled to prevent the winger influencing the game. Kept working, but Chelsea repeatedly found a route into dangerous positions on his side.

Andrey Santos — 5

Had moments at both ends during United’s more encouraging first half, including an opportunity to score against his former club. His influence faded as Chelsea gained control, and he was withdrawn after the dismissal.

Carlos Baleba — 5

Helped United compete in midfield before the break, but was unable to stop Lavia escaping the pressure in the move that produced Rogers’ goal. Replaced by Mainoo with United chasing an equaliser.

Amad — 7

United’s most troublesome attacker for much of the first half. His pace and willingness to run at Fofana created openings, but the finishing did not reward that work. Those missed opportunities became more costly as the match progressed.

Bruno Fernandes — 6

His return brought creativity, although he wasted a good chance from Mbeumo’s delivery. Supplied threatening balls into the penalty area but could not turn United’s stronger passages into a lead. Influence diminished after the interval.

Matheus Cunha — 5

Had a first-half header ruled out for offside and failed to connect with a dangerous Fernandes delivery after Chelsea went ahead. Found promising positions without providing the finish United required.

Bryan Mbeumo — 6

Created an excellent opportunity for Fernandes and came close to a spectacular late goal when Penders diverted his shot onto the crossbar. Offered a threat, but United needed more decisive attacking contributions before the game moved away from them.

Manchester United substitutes

Kobbie Mainoo — 5: Introduced shortly before Martínez’s dismissal. Had little opportunity to change the midfield balance and was booked for fouling Palmer.

Ayden Heaven — 6: Helped United reorganise with 10 men. Defended one late Palmer run well, staying with the forward and guiding him away from goal.

Mason Mount — 5: Could not give United a sustained attacking outlet after coming on. Spent much of his appearance trying to contain Chelsea rather than influence the match in possession.

Joshua Zirkzee — 5: Replaced Amad but struggled to retain the ball effectively. One poor touch handed Palmer a shooting opportunity, although he later earned the corner from which Mbeumo struck the woodwork.
