Man City have fresh injury concerns over Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol after Enzo Maresca confirmed both defenders asked to come off during the 3-1 defeat at Forest.

The pair were replaced at half-time with City trailing 2-0, but Maresca said the changes were prompted by fitness problems. Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly came on for the second half.

“Both injury, both asked for a change,” Maresca said, in comments reported by the Press Association.

Man City injury news: Gvardiol had problems during the week

Maresca said Gvardiol had been managing an issue before the trip to the City Ground, while Guéhi also requested a substitution because of injury.

The manager did not specify either problem or give a recovery timetable in the reported update. Their availability now becomes a concern heading into the international break.

Both had been named in their national squads, with Guéhi selected by England and Gvardiol by Croatia, according to Sports Mole.

Maresca criticises City’s first-half intensity

The injury explanation came alongside a blunt assessment of City’s performance.

In his post-match press conference, Maresca highlighted his team’s failure to match Forest’s intensity and compete effectively for duels and second balls.

Jair Cunha opened the scoring before Liam Delap doubled Forest’s lead inside 18 minutes. Rayan Cherki pulled a goal back after the interval, only for Delap’s second to settle the match.

Maresca welcomed the improvement after half-time but felt City had left themselves too much to recover.

International break offers time to respond

City won their opening seven Premier League matches but have now lost three in succession, following defeats by Aston Villa and Brighton.

Maresca said the international break would be used to assess what needs to improve, while stressing the importance of keeping perspective after those contrasting runs.

The fitness of Guéhi and Gvardiol adds another question before City resume their league campaign at home to Fulham on 21 November.
