Denzel Bentley calls out Conor Benn

Denzel Bentley challenged Conor Benn to a British showdown after defeating Shane Mosley Jr on points at London’s Copper Box Arena.

Benn, who watched Saturday’s fight from ringside, responded with “easy work” as Bentley turned his attention to his next opponent.

The exchange followed a successful Zuffa Boxing debut for Bentley, who floored Mosley in the second round but was taken the full ten-round distance.

The judges scored the fight 96-94, 96-93 and 95-94 for Bentley, whose early knockdown proved important in a competitive contest.

Mosley recovered to keep the Londoner working, denying him the stoppage that had appeared possible after the second-round attack.

BoxingScene’s report described Bentley as a deserved winner and reported his ambition to challenge for another world title.

Conor Benn responds to Bentley challenge

Bentley also welcomed the prospect of facing Benn, whose presence at ringside brought a potential domestic fight into focus.

talkSPORT reported that Benn responded positively to the challenge. However, no agreement, date or venue has been announced.

Both boxers are signed to Zuffa, according to BoxingScene, although that does not establish that negotiations have begun.

Bentley moves forward after WBO setback

The win followed Bentley’s removal as WBO middleweight champion after a dispute over his mandatory obligations.

He had sought permission to face Mosley before mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez, but the governing body rejected that request.

Saturday’s contest therefore took place without the WBO belt at stake. Our report on Bentley losing his world title explains the ruling.

Victory gives Bentley a platform from which to pursue another major fight. Whether that comes against Benn or through a return to championship contention remains unresolved.
