Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle questioned the decision to disallow Dan Burn’s goal after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Burn thought he had put the visitors ahead in the first half, only for referee Robert Jones to penalise Yoane Wissa for holding Timothy Castagne. VAR upheld the on-field decision.

Jacob Murphy eventually broke the deadlock with a powerful strike in the 80th minute, but Rodrigo Muniz equalised three minutes later to deny Newcastle victory at Craven Cottage.

Newcastle boss disputes Burn decision

Jaissle described the first-half ruling as “a soft decision”, in comments reported by the Shields Gazette.

He contrasted it with Newcastle’s defeat by Everton, when Thierno Barry’s winner stood despite Fabian Schar taking a blow to the face during the move.

The comparison was “difficult to understand and to digest”, said Jaissle, who maintained that Newcastle had created enough opportunities to win.

The officials took a different view of the Burn incident. Their explanation identified Wissa’s deliberate hold on Castagne as the offence, with the VAR confirming the decision to award Fulham a free-kick.

Late goals leave both sides searching for a winner

Newcastle’s frustration extended beyond the disallowed goal. Murphy’s strike from outside the penalty area had put them within reach of three points before substitute Muniz responded with a clever close-range finish.

Both teams still had opportunities to settle the match. Bernd Leno denied Lewis Hall, while Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek kept out Ryan Sessegnon as the contest opened up late on.

Despite the result, Jaissle felt Newcastle had responded positively to their previous performance. He praised their commitment and togetherness, saying they had grown into the game after an uncertain opening.
